We've posted the Updated Posting Guidelines to the FAQ & Must Reads section. Just for your reference, here they are again: ********** Online since 2002, the Alembic Club is a true community. People love to join the discussions, many of us extend a hand to newcomers, answering all manners of questions that come up. So far, so good. The one thing we all seem to have in common is our appreciation of Alembic basses and guitars. Beyond that we are a diverse group, who have through our posts developed a practice of treating each other with respect and courtesy, which is reflected in the overall feel of the community. New members frequently remark about how helpful our members are and what a friendly place the club is. This is somewhat unusual compared to other online communities. To help preserve this feeling of community we offer the following posting guidelines. - Treat all members with respect and kindness, and treat yourself with respect and kindness as well. - Craft your post as if you expect that the mother of someone you hold dear reads all the posts. Or your own mother, for that matter. - No sexism, no racism, no politics, no religion. No personal attacks. - Keep in mind that you do not know where someone else is in life. Respect that all people face good times and bad times, and try not to impose your own mood. - Try to stay within the best traditions of humor. - Employ some level of humility. We all love our instruments. We each have our own ideas about what makes a great instrument. But treating each other with respect is to recognize that others have different ideas and that others love their instruments too. - If someone posts something that makes you angry or upset, pause before responding. Try crafting a response that considers context and employs respect. - Don’t beat yourself up. We all make mistakes. If you post something that you later regret, just learn from it. Then jump back in and post something else. - Use the edit button. In the top right hand corner of your post is the edit icon. You can edit a post for up to 72 hours after it’s initially posted. You cannot add pictures in the edit process (but you can delete images). Keep in mind that when you edit a post it does not show up as a new post. The longer you wait to edit a post, the less likely others will notice that it has been edited. Thus editing is more useful when it’s fairly immediate. - Using ALL CAPS is considered to be shouting, and therefore inappropriate. - When thinking of copying text or pictures from another site to post on the board, check to see if the site has a copyright message at the bottom of the page. At the very least it may be a good idea to at least reference the other site with a link. Keep in mind that this discussion board is being provided for our use by our hosts at Alembic, and a link to the board is prominently displayed on Alembic’s web site. We are essentially in their home and we should act as if we were invited into the very living room of the Wickersham household. | ||

A current thread, which seems to be on the verge of being ended by our moderators on the basis that it MIGHT get too offensive, has caused me to look up some definitions in Webster's (it's my philosophy training...). (Caps are mine.) Moderate (adj.): 1) within reasonable limits; avoiding excesses or extremes; temperate or restrained 2) mild; calm; gentle; not violent 3)OF AVERAGE OR MEDIUM QUALITY, AMOUNT, SCOPE, RANGE, ETC. Censor (n): 2) an official with the power to examine publications, movies, television programs, etc. and to remove or prohibit anything considered obscene, libelous, politically objectionable, etc. It's the third definition of "moderate" that doesn't seem to jibe with Alembic, the company or the products. | ||

I gotta tell you...I just don't understand what's going on here. I took a break from the forum for awhile because there was a particular influence who had kind of ruined things for me. Rather than get irritated and type things I'd regret, I simply walked away. It's not that difficult to do. Coming back recently, I've found more thread closings and moderator warnings than I have in the seven years I've been a member here. What is wrong with having political or otherwise somewhat controversial/spirited posts relating to general social commentary? Look at the company with whom this Forum is associated...the musicians who were part of its infant years, the controversy that surrounded many of them and the beliefs they held dear. I can't believe that on this site in particular, there even would be a suggestion to close a thread that references Kent State. It was a tragic moment in American History out of which came incredible sadness, anger as well as music. We played For What It's Worth at last year's Chicago Gathering. What the hell is happening here? No forum should tolerate personal attacks. Nor should any forum permit racial slurs. But cutting people off at the knees everytime a nerve is touched seems completely unreasonable. If you don't like a post, simply move on. As I said, it's not that difficult to do. To borrow a term from that time: Right on Jonathan! Now let's talk about the elephant in the room that no one seems to want to mention: We were doing fine before the Hal days. I thought once he left it would be as it was. Unfortunately, though he is gone, his influence is still permeating the site. I don't post very often now, mainly because of certain people who could not keep there mouths or keyboards shut. It has become messy, contrived and too self centered to be interesting anymore. I loved when jimmyj offered his advice on basses, wiring etc, davehouck whose calming advice was, for me, a lot of common sense and respectful as his job was indeed not an envious one and I am glad that the pressure has been taken from him to a degree by other forum members moderating. There just seem to be a minority that spoilt it for the majority. I don't understand USA politics, I don't even understand my own UK politics so discussing it to the point of insults seems a fruitless exercise..leave it in the bar with your close friends who don't take offense and forget about it the next day because they have had too much to drink. It was a great place to come and visit, maybe it still is but I have noticed certain members have dropped away too. | ||

Dave Don't know whether you intended to close this one, but my comment fits better here. It may have been the elephant in the room, but I doubt that any one person could have made a happy musical group into a bunch of sour folks. Yet, I, too, haven't been visiting as much as in the past. So, what happened? The economy got sick. Paul died. A lot of us had personal and professional issues (a lot more than in the past). The tone changed. And, maybe we had some people start to dominate a lot of threads. Although, from my perspective, we have had new people come in and dominate before. But, we didn't have the sickness and death and issues that, I submit, took us off path. So, now what? Let's hang in there. We'll decide (elsewhere) whether we'll discuss politics. If Dave wants to set it up, we'll get a thread going about whether to discuss religion or the weather, too. My vote is we chill. If we need to, we'll step away and then step back. Either our ills will be cured (my hope) or we'll get used to dealing with them. And, when that happens, the tone will change back. We still play alembics. And, just as importantly, we all still play (don't underestimate that). My two cents. dw |
