This is kind of subjective, don't you think Bill? I mean there's the pre-retirement years w/ Wolf... There's post retirement Mesa-Boogie years.... There's early 80's Tiger years..... Late 80's and 90's w/ Midi & Rosebud.... etc etc etc..... Goin' through the archives, there's several different "tones" as they relate to Jerry, and Alembic Activator electronics were never really part of that equation..... For me so far, either a tele or strat into a F2B>SF-2>Mesa 2:90>2x12"EV's has been a good reference for that '72-'74 sound.... |

Mike has a good point about the era of the guitars he used, but what about the electronics? I thought Jerry ultimately favored Dimarzio's and a unity buffered preamp. Quite unlike what you find in an Alembic, unless I am much mistaken. Was there a time period when he favored the style of filters found on Alembic intstruments? There's much to be said about his tone coming from his hands, of course. His playing was instantly recognizable, regardless of the instrument. But that discussion has been observed here many times. |

Yes, it is subjective. And yes, Jerry used different guitars and rigs. That being said, subjectively, I'm still curious about the settings Tribute and Further players use to get the, (admittedly subjective), Jerry tone. 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, Guild, LP, Alligator, Wolf, Tiger, Rosebud, Bolt, whatever. So which subjective pickups do you use? Subjective middle position or subjective bright position? Where do you set your subjective volume control? Your subjective filters? Subjectively, Bill, tgo |

When I play my Tribute, I plug it into my Boogie amp and adjust the settings till it sounds good to my ear. I don't even think about the "Jerry tone"... |

Hi Bill. Here's what I try to do... I bought a bunch of Adamas Graphite/Carbon fiber 2mm picks and generally only play with those. I am also using 11-48 strings. When I strum or play single notes I try (TRY!) to add some vibrato to the strings via finger movement. For amp I am using the Epiphone Valve JR head and Cabinet (the one I brought to the gathering last year) modified for extra high end output. Only one knob so simplicity is nice! I keep it at about 3-4 o'clock on the dial. No eq on the guitar effect! Only the Further Filters do my equalization. The Further volume control works great with the Valve JR and adds extra expression as the amp naturally overdrives when you crank the guitar Run the whole thing through a Bose PS-1 with flat EQ settings. And then I sound just like...ME! But they tell me I get the Jerry tone sometimes. |

If you want to hear the Jerry tone, why not play one of his recordings? :-p |

Todd Lena from Grateful Friends got a pretty convincing Jerry tone from his Furthur. In fact, to my ears, it's probably the closest I've heard: http://www.gratefulfriends.com/ |
