Hi Mica,
I've just bought a beautiful Elan bass from Graham at Bass World in Maidstone Kent UK. It looks like a flamed walnut top with a maple body but the neck laminates look like contrasting maples colours althogh similar in colour? I would love to know more about it (who it was originally made for etc..) so do you have anything on record? Its serial number is: 92H7242 - many thanks - Jon

Hey Jon, welcome! I used to own an Elan and I liked it quite a bit. It used to curb my Fender cravings nicely. I hope you have a lot of fun with your new bass. Did you register it yet? If not, go here:

http://www.alembic.com/cgi-bin/register.pl

I believe you can request a build sheet there, also. No playing till your fingers bleed and do take care.

Hey - Poor Nigel - thanks for the post,

I bought this bass to try to re-kindle my interest in music performance and stage work - little did I know. I'm going out gigging with my dad (70 years + old) playing jazz standards in his band after I've had a long layoff. I've not done this (jazz)for years since I'm a country player mainly ('52 Telecaster thorough and through) but want to reconnect with audiences and have some fun. Been off the band scene for a while and always had a childhood/teens dream of an Alembic re: Dead(JG) - S. Clark - Mark King (go visit Isle of Wight - its beautiful) - J. Entw. etc.. Had many instruments but I had no idea Alembics were so wonderful and I have never played anything quite like it. Plan to post some pictures soon. Next purchase could be a Garcia six string and let the Tele go!!!

PS love the Q sound - Yeeeee......

"It looks like a flamed walnut top with a maple body"
"Quilted maple top"

"the neck laminates look like contrasting maples colours althogh similar in colour?"
"7 piece maple/purpleheart neck"

This does not seem like the same bass.

I agree, but I looked carefully.
That's what the build record for 92h7242 shows.

Jon - I saw in your profile you've listed 7247 as the serial number, maybe there's a mixup?

Hi friends,

Oh dear - got the number wrong didn't I - must be the East Anglian air or the excitement of playing an Alembic for the first time!!!! Sorry Mica for wasting your time - could you check again - thanks

I was thinking the serial number must be off, but what are the odds of picking another and having it come up proper? Pretty slim! Hey, nice bass! Do have fun gigging with your Dad Jon.

Brother Jon!!!

nice to have you here!
Even nicer than your bass ...it's about the people not about the basses ...oh ...huh ....I think that's not completely true.
BTW you're saved just in time. All the Paul's were gathering for the table-banging (I still have an odd feeling about that) with the empty bottles. Unfortunately Brother Paul the Good one is rerouting his career from beer-brewing to kinda computer shrink. So ...the beer ...well I hope you ANEC dudes will have some.
ANyway Jon welcome from this side of the pond.
You'll like the place.

Welcome aboard Jon. That is a beautiful bass. I think that Walnut and Zebrawood are my favorites. The UK is becoming home to a lot of mighty fine Alembics.

All quite amusing, especially since we went from a 5 to a 4 string...

Picture worth a thousand words, or even just a few beer bottle bangings?
