A VERY good read; thanks for posting the link, Tommy. I'm a big fan of Jack. I have taken a number of seminars from him at Fur Peace and can say that he is a great teacher because his level of commitment to helping students improve is HUGE. The guy really cares. | ||

Mr. Jack Casady made sounds with #1 that are still an inspiration for me to this day. From a personnel perspective it was my big favorite of all his Bass Sounds . Mr. Casady was ONE of my first major influences on the Electric Bass . I think it would be AWESOME to see him play a NEW Series II Bass in a public performance . YES ! that would be quite EXCELLENT ! | ||

He kind-of implied that #1 was a "science project" (to determine optimal PUP location) that took on a life of its own. Did he ever use any other Alembics... or just #1??? I'd love to see a recent pic of #1: who's got it??? | ||

I think Jack might still like to have #1 as a piece of his personal history, but I don't think it would get played at all. It should also be noted that according to Jack, #1 was dropped on a concrete floor and sent back to Alembic for repair of body cracks. He said that the bass never sounded the same after it sustained the body damage. | ||

I found this link on the web a few years ago regarding ALEMBIC 72-01 I also remember that about in the early 1990's it was for sale again and I vaguely remember having a phone conversation with a fellow who had an ad in the "San Francisco Advertiser " , about buying it, and I decided at the time not to for some reason, I think he said it needed some work done ; perhaps my funds were too low at the time to take on the project. As far as I have been told by others who seem to have some information on it the top was changed and now just has Series I electronics. Farm out! Right Arm! Outta State! Great article. I like his take on tone and where it falls in the mix as well as where bass lines should sit in general. Interesting input from sonicus too. I can't imagine walking into a music store and seeing that bass for sale... There sure are some legendary instruments out there MIA. I wonder if Jamerson's P will ever show up? Or Jaco's J. Man, we need a thread for this topic... | ||

I don't really know for sure but I might speculate the Darlington Pair -Emitter mod on the Guild/ Hagstrom pickups ,perhaps also added magnet material ?Filters in the Bass as well . I think that if you have an ALEMBIC SF-2 and either the old stock Guild / Hagstroms or Dark Star pickups you might get a sound you might like. My old Guild/ Hagstrom pickups were modified with added magnet material . I sold those pickups in 1975.  | ||

Actually I'm using a Guild/Dark Stars with a SF2. I get a really good sound although I would like to get a little more power out of the D & G strings. I thought I might try a stratoblaster to see if that would give me that little extra punch I'm looking for. | ||

Yes , perhaps. Also raising the pole piece screw adjustment on the pickups , you were able do do that on the OLD Guild pickups , can you do that on yours? Also perhaps if you wire the Bass Stereo you could dial in the bridge pickup with added FILTER GAIN with the SF-2 ! Just some thoughts _____ | ||
