After bidding away at that Series I Exploiter ("the phantom Series II"), it went over $5,000 and I still wasn't the top bidder. So.... I purchased Spyder 4-string #17 from Bass Central! Beaver Felton (proprietor) mentioned that this bass has never been played. It was taken out of its box to be photographed, then put back in its box and stored until they ship it to me next week. Thank you to Oliver (the mighty Spyderman!) and Alan D. for your special guidance on this choice. Thank you to Mica, Val, and Dave Fung for clearing up the Series I/II issue on the e-bay bass. And, (as long as I sound like an Academy Award recipient), thank you to ALEMBIC for making such a terrific instrument!!! It's mine, all mine!!! I will post some photos of it as soon as I get it, here and on my website (www.thewhoshow.com). I will be putting my 1983 Exploiter/Spoiler up for sale within the week. Photos of that bass are on the website listed above. BSee, please e-mail me to discuss since you expressed interest first. My deepest appreciation to all. Mike Bisch |

Well, damn, then I guess I won't get to even see the Spyder when I try to stop in at Bass Central on Monday. Congratulations on what should be a fabulous playing bass for you! |

Thanks Bob. If you're nice to them I'm sure they'll let you see it before they give it to the UPS man. Can't wait to get it Wednesday!!! Let me know if you're still interested in my Exploiter, I e-mailed you separately on this. Thanks, Mike |

Mike, congrats to your decision to join the Spyder club. You will not be disappointed, believe me. But beware, the Spyder is huge. I think your Exploiter is medium scale!? So take care of the huge headstock and train your back well to keep the heavy load.... Oliver (Spyderman) |

Bob (bsee), I tried to e-mail you a photo of my Exploiter but it keeps bouncing back for some reason. So, for your convenience and the convenience of others, I posted a photo on the Swap Meet thread of my now-for-sale Exploiter if anyone wants to check it out. She's a peach! Thanks, Mike |

I can sorta vouch for it having been put away in the box. I was at Bass Central a little over a month ago. They had several sweet Alembics on the wall. Not a Spyder amongst them. Musta been tucked away, all snug in it's box. |

Beaver did promise this was kept under wraps, glad to hear it's the truth. Bet if it was out there on the sales floor, you would have had your mitts all over that bad boy! MB |

Mike, Your reaction is the same as mine was after I received my Spyder and opened the case. All I could do was stare at it - It's still the most beautiful (not to mention functional) instrument I've ever owned in 27 years of playing bass. And yes, it is heavy compared to other instruments. However, it also has other qualities which make up for the weight. Such as ... watching folks get out of your way when you have it strapped on ... seeing people stare in amazement ... hearing folks compliment the sound ... or surround you in a Guitar Center begging to play it ... or follow you around a Guitar Center when you move to the amp section .... or stand in awe after you plug it in .... Congrats on the Spyder! And best wishes for you and your band. Rock on! Alan P.S. Oliver, it's all your fault! First you corrupted me, then together we corrupted Mike! :-) |

Alan, I suspect the benefits of owning this bass will "outweigh" any negative qualities, should I ever find any. I hope everyone gets out of my way!!! Thank you for your support during the buying process. And speaking of corruption...you seem to have corrupted him with all this talk of Ohio State Football! Now you've scared him off! Keavin - I hope this Spyder DOES bite....any soundman who tries to defeat me and my mighty tone! MB |

Brother Mike, I played the Spyder at Ollie's place a couple of weeks ago. Really very balanced. Question of weight ...well ...I'm rather used to it seen the habit of playing Bonnie for the last 8 years. I think Bonnie (and Jan the River ones Marylin) are even heavier. I don't mind ...it's a question of holding youself up and straight. Paul TBO |

Brother Paul the Baddie, It's true - when you pick it up out of its case, your first thought is, "Man, that's heavy!". Then when you strap it on and start playing, you kinda forget that. The balance really is spectacular. It's the sheer size that's intimidating - you just have to plan ahead when moving about - and better hope that people get out of your way. Since all I have to do is stand still and thunder away, this should be simple. She ain't heavy, she's my Spyder. Mint, she is really nice indeed. I plugged her in for the first time last night and she ROARED right out of the gate. I was blown away, so were my bandmates. In lieu of giving her a specific female name, I thought her name should be a little more ambiguous yet Entwistle-related, humorous, as well as something that will demonstrate my devotion. Therefore, Spyder #17 will now be known as: My Wife. Cheers, Mike |

Thanks all for your sincere best wishes on my marriage to My Wife. Pictures to come soon - I don't have any Who Show gigs until the end of May, so I'll try to get something before that. I'll try to keep them tasteful - no bachelor party pics for you lot! As a reminder, my Exploiter/Spoiler is for sale. Very exquisite flamed maple top. More info about that under the Swap Shop thread. Cheers! Mike |

Please stop tempting me Mike...... It is indeed a very sweet bass..... If my bathroom remodel was finished, and I was a little further along on the kitchen...Oh yeah, if I had my Further..... What's that line in the 23rd Psalm? I shall not want....I shall not want.... I shall not want.... (repeat as necessary). |

The Alembic bass is my shepherd; I shall not want. It maketh me to play down in green pastures: It leadeth me beside Santa Rosa. It restoreth my sound: It leadeth me in the paths of Alembicness for its name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Fender, I will fear no Precision: For Spyder art with me; Thy purpleheart and maple, they comfort me. Thou preparest an art work before me in the presence of craftsmen; Thou annointest my bass with lemon oil; My LEDs runneth over. Surely Fender players shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of Alembic forever. Sorry, couldn't resist! Of course, I'm going to hell for that bit! At least Martha Stewart will have some company. Alan |

Just put two lovely photos of My Wife up on the Showcase thread. She's a peach! Ollie - I would choose "Hell" for the 8-string, since it must sound just wicked! "Heaven" for the 4-string is appropriate, since it must be heaven for you to own one! Mike |

Ollie, How about "Real" and "Me"? The Real Me is my favorite Who tune. What better way to pay tribute to John? Or "Sister" and "Disco?" Or "My-My" and "Gen-Gen" (My Generation)? "Happy Jack" and "Jackie Happ?" Alan P.S. Mike, I'm not sleazy and wheezy. At least, not last time I checked! :-)

Mike, They are and continue to be great. BTW,what's the difference between a Michigan Diploma and an Ohio State diploma? With Michigan, you get a free bowl of soup. With Ohio State, you get a job. Speaking of wheezing, Chris Perry (pick number 26 of 32) was the only Meatchicken player taken in the first round. Ohio State had three. Sounds like Lloyd and the Chickerines are sucking. As usual. We may have to move you guys to the Miscellaneous forum if you keep this up (unless we can come up with something like "Irrelevant"...). Man, this has been a weird thread - interesting, but bizarre. Like palembic, I don't understand (or even try to) this football stuff, but come on Alan, that was two years ago! Or maybe only one, since I don't even know when football season is. About all I know is that every once in a while, traffic gets screwed up because half the people in the Bay Area decide there is nothing more important in life than to drive up to Oakland all at the same time - to the "Coliseum" no less, what a lovely concept... and then maybe riot a bit after the game if they get worked up enough and don't like the outcome. Enjoy the game if you like, but give up the "mine is better than yours" grudge match. Go play your basses for a while, make music not war, etc. Just my two cents. -Bob |

Bob, Mike, and all, Yes, it was two years ago. I've waited my whole life for the Bucks to win it all, and they finally did. What can I say? It just doesn't happen that often. As far as sports/football goes, for me, it's a way to stay connected to my roots. True, it's become commercialized, but when you move around as much as I do, it becomes important. And it's always fun (to me at least) to discuss the Ohio State- Michigan rivalry with someone else. Anyway, I'll drop it here. Mike, love the pics of you with your Spyder next to a pic of JE. Awesome! Taking Bob's suggestion, I'm going to go play my Alembics for a while. Alan

Alan, you are forgiven. I understand about "keeping connected to your roots", this is why I play in a Who tribute group in the first place. Talk about OSU all you want. I'm clearly not as passionate as you are about the rivalry - I just know that from a young age I was taught to dislike anything silver and red calling itself a "Buckeye". Isn't that a cool pic of my and JE? Totally unintentional pose but it turned out great. Oliver, I have JE's photo book on order. Sam, I'm under 40 and I'm easily confused myself. Now I'm going to go play MY Alembics! MB
