Mica/Val:

A question -

I've read a lot lately about BagEnd's ELF/INFRA sub system and the required ELF/INFRA integrator. It made me think of a statement I've never understood in the Alembic site product description for the SF-2.

Among the last lines in the description are these: "Interesting vocal effects including band limiting can be dialed in. And the opposite of the last effect can be used to extend the frequency response of closed box speaker enclosures."

Could I use my SF-2 to extend the low frequency output of a closed box? If so, how much and how do I set the SF-2 and the cab up? This weekend I'll be reworking a box to accept a BagEnd 18' driver I just got (not one of their designated "INFRA" drivers). It would be very easy to leave the box unported if my SF-2 could boost its performance significantly.

Bill

I notice your GAS seems to be in full effect. Does this mean you still have not aquired your beautiful new bass? Or are you just being extremly quiet about it's arrival? Inquiring minds want to know!

Bill - I think you'd want to be very careful using an SF-2 to "extend" the frequency response of a speaker. A speaker might be designed to roll off steeply below or above certain frequencies - so you may have to put a lot of power through the driver outside of the designed range to get extended flat response - could be risky.

I am just about GAS'd out! No. My bass is not here yet - but soon, I hope!

David: That's what my experience tells me, too. I just wonder what the SF-2 description is driving at (pardon pun). Waiting for my new bass is giving me waaay too much time to think...

Bill, I highly doubt it. The BagEnds are designed with the processor and the box/driver as a unit to work optimally. Simply adding a variable filter to an existing box that has it's own designed in performance tradeoffs will likely result in lower performance and or damage/reliablity issues with the driver from overdriving at low frequencies. You might luck onto a setup that works, but I doubt it based upon a lot of years building, designing and modifying amps and speakers. To do a speaker box that does a true 30Hz for low B (or even 40Hz for E), at decent levels with a clean sound and efficiency means a big box; laws of physics and all.....

Guys: In all of my experience, my expectations would be the same as yours. I'm still curious what the description was getting at, though. Well, I have to call and pester Mica and Val about how much longer I need to wait till my new bass is shipped to me. I'll ask them about the SF description when I call.
