Not very clever, I know, but mine came with names.... The Rogue The Exploiter The Persuader The Spoiler Although, some of my band mates have taken to calling the Rogue "The Earthquake Machine" JP |

JP - I'm sort of in the same league with you and Magni, maybe even a little worse. "my bass" I'm not much of a collector, so after getting my 'first' Alembic, I now have "my bass" and "my old bass". I guess i'm just not into naming stuff, always seemed to have trouble with that, but they both know how much I love them, so it's not a problem, certainly not a lack of affection (even if one of them is only being looked at with fond memories these days...). -Bob |

I have only named one of my Olympics (My neighbor, and old deadhead, actually called them this last week - I have read the jokes about Olympics on here, but it is soooo different when someone actually calls them this). My 20th is named Butterscotch, as it is old and yellowed to a butterscotch coloring on the body. I never call it Butterscotch, except in contexts such as, "Please hand me the butterscotch one." My other Olympic is the brown one. The only bass I have with a 'real' name is my old Les Paul. Old Blue, though it is a dark brown, never leaves the house and may get played once a week or every other week, at the most. However, it is definitely not last in line when polishing and maintenance times come around every season. |

It's funny how names come about. The only Basses I have with names are my custom Alembics. All the others have names like - The '68 Jazz, or my walnut Excel and so on. "Dark Prince" came about when I saw another featured custom called "The Purple Princess". I figured that since mine was a 36" scale 6 string, I couldn't refer to it with a female name. Also, I remembered that someone once called me that when I was a kid. I went to a really white bread school, and I stood out. Anyway, it stuck for the Bass at least. The original "Dark Prince" soon turned into the "Evil Twin" after all the grief we encountered when it was being made (and even now!). So, I ended up with two Basses! "Black Byrd" is the name of my current custom. It's also the title of an album by Jazz trumpeter and composer Donald Byrd. Since I discovered him, he's become my all time favorite musician, to the point that I wanted to name my Bass in his honor. As well, "Black Byrd" just sounds so appropriate for an Ebony and Purpleheart Alembic custom. Everybody now.....Go out and buy the album!!! Rami |

Hey Rami, Good to have you back amongst the Alembic fold. Methinks if you had to name all your basses, you (or anyone else for that matter) would probably have a hard time thinking up that many names without repeating yourself, LOL! Cheers, Kevin Me jealous? Naaaaaaaah, LOL! |

on the lighter side.. Too Many Daves (sic basses) By: Dr. Suess Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave? Well, she did. And that wasn't a smart thing to do. You see, when she wants one and calls out, "Yoo-Hoo! Come into the house, Dave!" she doesn't get one. All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run! This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves As you can imagine, with so many Daves. And often she wishes that, when they were born, She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm. And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim. And one of them Shadrack. And one of them Blinkey. Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face. Another one Marvin O'Gravel Balloon Face. And one of them Ziggy. And one Soggy Muff. One Buffalo Bill. And one Biffalo Buff. And one of them Sneepy. And one Weepy Weed. And one Paris Garters. And one Harris Tweed. And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt. And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt. And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate... But she didn't do it. And now it's too late. Dr. Seuss, what a genius. for the record, I've never named my basses. It's always been "the (fill in the blank)". |

Well, things change as time goes by, and so do names apparently. The names I came up with at first sounded nice, but weren't very practical and to be honest, I didn't actually use them very much (those @#$%%! basses never listen anyway!) With Birdy gone (anxiously awaiting my new Glockenklang amp to arrive) it's the 'Walnut Brothers' that remain: monsieurs 'Flame', 'Burl' and 'Graft'... Wilfred |

I just got my new '95 Alembic bass, sort of like an Elan with sort of a larger Orion-ish body, and due to its ability to speak in low tones, I decided an Entish name made most sense. But then, its neck is anything but slow, so I need a name conveying more speed, which as anyone knows, is hardly a likely attribute of the Ents. And then it hit me: Quickbeam was considered the closest thing to a hasty Ent by none other than Treebeard himself, and so I grant a fitting name to my new (and only) bass: Quickbeam! Mark |

Alright another Tolkienite. Mark The Ent One, or would that cause confusion with Ken The Elvish One? Quickbeam is a good name for a fine bass. I haven't taken time to comment on it in your introductory thread yet but it is very nice indeed. Sam |

For close to three decades i have longed for an Alembic guitar. No fancy pedigreed Fender or Gibson or any other would do. For me it would have to be a Northern California homegrown like myself. At last we have found each other. 04T13267. Not quite stone stock. With ebony and purple heart running up the center of her LED illuminated neck. Understated yet relentlessly exquisite. Definately strong woman energy in this one. I am thinking of naming her Susie after Susan "Thor" Wikersham of Alembic. Those in favor say "aye" those opposed get back to work or go make music. |

Urobouros, welcome. By "strong woman energy" do you mean that it can be soft and sweet or strong and kicking A, supportive in the background or taking the lead, depending on the demands of the situation? Rich |

"urobouros"? as in "the worm uroburous"? a great piece of obscure, fantasy literature. (Watch out for the mantichores). Another tolkeinite and now this. By all means, you should be playing nothing but an Alembic. Welcome Peter and Mark. |

Hi Peter, Welcome and that is one sweet guitar you have there. I'd be pleased if you named her "Susie", so I say Aye! And speaking of Susie-When I was but a child of 4 or 5 I had a crush on the Everly Brothers, both of them. I sang " Wake up Little Susie" all the time. I was convinced they wrote it for me. It drove my parents nuts. They were almost relieved when I started in on You Ain't Nuthin But a Hound Dog. Susan |

So far I have: "The Tribute", aka "The Alembic" I also have named my other guitars: "The Schecter" "The Danalectro" "The Ibanez" "The Gibson" "The Taylor" "The Strat" (notice that this is the only guitar other than "The Tribute" that was named after the model name) and "The Bass" I guess I am not very original when it comes to names. I have however named our cats, dog and children.

I've never been one to give names to instruments but my new (1998) Epic 5 has a name. The background: The pastor at our church has been a real pain in the butt lately. She has a kind-of strange name and we have nicknamed her "Bobinda". When I went into the club posts to show my wife pictures of the Epic, she asked what the top wood is. I said, "Bubinga". She said, "Bobinda"? We had a good laugh and agreed that my Bubinga Epic 5 will be called "The Reverend". Rich |

I haven't named instruments. When needing to refer to my guitars/basses I call them: The/My Orion The/My Brown Bass The/My Hagtrom or 8-string Bass The Jazz Bass ('76' with Jim Williams active electronics) The/My Vox Bass The/My Acoustic Guitar (mid 70's built at sea Fender but ok for my use) The/My Fender (62 Stratocaster) Keith |

OK, here's an interesting story... I don't think I would usually be the type of person to name my instrument, but I had to. A couple weeks ago I had a dream - it said Bird on the back of my bass in big letters. In the dream, I didn't want to name it that because it seemed too obvious, but I woke up and named it that. Hopefully I will be chanelling the spirit of Bird through my bass. |

Well, this is a little embarrasing, but I have a BC Rich Eagle bass that I bought new in 1978, long before I could afford an Alembic. I don't play it much these days, as its a 4 string and I play mostly 5 strings these days, and it's not an Alembic. I've had that bass for so long and I know it so well that I call it "The Wife." Probably, there's a joke somewhere in the fact that I left the wife for a newer, sleeker, better and pretty Alembic, but let's not go there!
