Anyone see the "review" for the custom signature series section? I know everyone has a right to an opinion, but what motivated this guy go out of his way to be so negative about alembic? It's not like someone held him down and made him buy one. I've never seen a single review from an alembic owner that wasn't stellar. I am sure they must exist, but alembic seems to command a sublime mystique that intoxicates 99.9% of us. |

Mr. Jamieson is from Fredericton, NB Canada. That explains a lot to me, but it would be very hard for me to explain it to anyone else. Northern Maine has basically the same gene pool as NB, the locals just won't admit it. His review is no big deal, and he has a right to express his ignorance in any way he pleases, just as I blatantly do at times. Of interest from his profile there, "I have a Frender Jazz bass right now, you don't need to see that cus i am sure you have all seen one before, but The pickguard on it is a bit different, I just made it a few days ago. It has a few buddhist images on it and a crow and a white cow." Nuff said.

I just read the review. It's like reading someone who disses a Ferrari, claims a Corvette is just as good, etc., and then casually reveals that they can't afford a Ferrari, never spent any time in one, but did see one once at the auto show for five minutes. "If I can't have one, they stink anyway". I believe the medical terminology for this is "SGS" (Sour Grapes Syndrome). Bill, tgo |

If he doesn't want one that just makes for less auction competition for those of us who really do want one. His loss, anyway. Rich |

I wouldn't spend too much time or energy analyzing Mr. Jamieson. Different people like different things. I've met people who've tried Alembics and don't particularly care for them. No biggie. At least they know what they like and don't like. Back on topic.....I'll probably cut and paste my old HC gear reviews and stick 'em up there. Peace, James |

It must take them months/years to post a review. I did one on the 15th and no sign of it yet. Looking through the posts, the newest I saw is from 2003. Gee, alert staff! Well, no big deal. FYI. |

As previously said, everyone is entitled to an opinion. The thing that strikes me about the review is that the only comment to come across is that Alembic's are expensive; which they are. I also think they are good value for money as well, but no denying they are expensive. When paying top prices for any piece of equipment, be it instruments, cars or whatever, you get into the niche end of the market where people are looking for something to do a particular thing exceptionally. It might be that the reviewer could not find what he was looking for in an Alembic, but we will never know as he never said anything with regard to where he felt the bass was not 'so good'. It seems to me that he cannot afford one and therefore is being critical of the fact that they cost so much. Never mind, I'm sure his life will be full of disappointments which will always be someone else' fault. I only played my first ever Alembic on Saturday (and purchased it there and then) and have to say that I'm really pleased with it. But I have a number of other basses which I'm also really pleased with and they all have a place in my armoury. Enough said. |

Huh, I find it strange that a person writing a review for a product starts the review with 2 stars and "Just Kiddng" and then makes the statement that he could "never afford one of these instruments" I am an instrument builder myself and find it ironic that a person can write a review after "playing" "ONE" of my instuments. Many details come into play when it comes to the tone of an instrument, Construction, Wood, Nut Material, Saddle Material, Setup, ect, In my case does Brazilian Rosewood "sound better" than Mahogany? Absolutly not! wood in my case determines the overall sound of the guitar therefore if I am looking for a bright sounding Bluegrass guitar I would go with Mahogany. If on the other hand I was looking to get a well balanced mellow sounding guitar I would go with Rosewood. EVERY Alembic I have ever played, heard, and now own, is first and foremost a top quality instrumnet in every way that I desire, Fit, Finish, Tone, I could have purchased a less costly instument for sure but the sacrifices I would have had to make with what is important to me were not worth the price difference. Just my rant and two cents |

It's too bad that such ignorance has an open forum to potentially affect others' opinions without any merit of its own. We here know better. Even if this guy has heard an Alembic in the right hands, I wouldn't trust his hearing or judgement. |

Like most restaurant reviews, instrument reviewers should play an instrument (or instrument model) more than once before rendering an "informed" judgement. There is no way you can form anything other than a first impression if you only try something once. If you do it twice or three times, and you experience the same thing, then the person/product/experience in question deserves what it/they get(s). The first Fender I played sucked. It had horrible strings, one tone, and cost too much (for me). It was a Fender Precision. To this day, I don't own one. I tried others. Many others. In fact, I've only played one Precision that I thought was worth a :"it in the 28 years I've played bass. Unfortunately, someone else owned it. Now, I own three Jazz basses. Why? Because, for the most part, everyone I've picked up has felt pretty good to me. And it took more than one to convince me to buy one. I submit that the reviewer in this case might have a bias against Alembics. That's cool. He doesn't have to play them, and no one's putting a gun to his head telling him he has to. The way I see it, that's more for us. He can have the mass produced, less than precision (no pun intended) made stuff out there if he wants. Just leave the Alembics to us! Alan |
