I am curious as to what strings everyone is using. I currently have an endorsement deal with Curt Mangan Strings. Curt worked at Dean Markley for 17 years before deciding to start his own company. I recently purchased an Epic which I strung with Curt Mangan strings. A few days later, I purchased another Epic that had just been strung with a new set of Alembic strings. To be honest, I like the sound and feel of the Curt Mangan strings better. I have been using them for about six months and have found them to last at least as long as the DR Marcus Miller strings that I had used previously. Like all of you, I am in search of that elusive "perfect tone". My style is more of the "in the pocket" type of player than anything else. I do not slap or pop like many of today's players. I do occasionally delve into the John Entwislte, John Paul Jones, James Jamerson realm as well as that of Geddy Lee and John Deacon. The player whose tone I like more than anybody else is Marcus Miller. The style that I like is that of James Jamerson. However my playing has been described more closely to a combination of James Jamerson, John Entwistle and Adam Clayton. (I know, strange combination). My keyboard player, who is a Berklee Grad and teaches music at a prestigous Prep school, has had several songs on the radio, including a number one single. He has told me that I am the best "in the pocket" player that he has ever seen. I consider that quite a compliment. I do not mention this to boost my own ego, I just want some accurate feedback as to what bassists who play similar styles are using for strings and amps. Thanks, by the way, I LOVE MY EPICS!

Kevin,
There have been lots of discussions on strings. If you perform a search you should find all sorts of information. In a nut shell most of the major manufacturers are used by all of the folks on this board. You'll find that the types run from Stainless steel round wounds to flat wound. The results of all of the discussions are pretty much if you find a string that works for you use it. Otherwise keep trying until you find something you like.

I have finally switched to Rotosound flatwounds for my Epic since after trying almost brand of rounds I could never get the tone I was looking for. rockbassist, if you say the Curt Mangan strings are as good as you say they are, I would like to try a set. How can I go about finding where to buy them since all my local (NYC) stores never heard of them.

Hey..I use..oh,we've been thru that already.

Peter, check out Juststrings.com, or even Musicans Friend and the like. I recently switched over to DR's but couldnt find the specific set I was looking for locally so I had to do the online thing.

I have checked out Juststrings.com. They do have good prices making it a little easier to try different strings and compare them. I used to use DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams. I personally feel that Marcus has the best tone that I have ever heard. Again, I realize that not everyone will agree. When I started this thread I was just trying to get ideas. By the way Curt Mangan is one of the easiest companies to get a sponsorship deal with. All you do is go to their website and fill out a simple form. I have a cost deal with them. On average I pay abou $3.50 per set of strings. Well worth it. Like I said before, I find their strings to last as long as DR's and they have a better feel. I have had great luck with them and HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM. Check them out. Thanks to all who responded

Peter, AKA locutusofborg10, Try www.curtmnagan.com. They might not be exactly what you are looking for but considering the fact that they are one of the easiest company's to deal with they are worth the look. They are very easy to get endorsement deals with. As you know, once you have one company it is easier to get another deal. I have been playing bass for 30 years. I have tried pretty much every string imagineable. The fact is that even if Curt Managan strings are not your "DREAM STRING" you can buy from them at cost and that is well worth the time it takes to check them and the competition out. They have no minimum orders. I honestly find their tone, playability and longevity to be up there with DR. I realize that some players my disagree with me but it is worth a shot. You can also design you own string sets by ordering individual strings and try diferrent gauges to help you in your decision. Good luck, Check them out. There is something to be said for being the only member of a band who has an edorsement deal.
