It doesn't look like it's two pieces. It's completely normal. We tend to aim it between pickups if possible now, and it's also glued up with a shim veneer as well. Since this bass has obviously been refinished, you should make sure the shielding in the electronics cavity wasn't painted over - it's actually something I wind up seeing too frequently in refinishes.
