Hum Problems

I have a Series I Short Scale from 1981.
When I use the Stereo Jack and I touch with my fingers one of the five contacts of the 5-Pin, than there is hum as long as I am touching it.
On the other hand, when I use the 5-Pin, than most of the time there is also hum. When I touch the 5 Pin Cable plug the hum stopps as long as I am touching the plug.
What can I do?
I guess it has to do with the grounding of the bass. My idea is to connect the ground signal of the 5 Pin with the “ring” (I hope you know what I mean) of the 5 Pin and connect it with the bridge.
Have you better ideas? Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Axel,

Don't connect a ground wire yet, first we want to figure out what the source of the hum is.

Check that the nut holding the 1/4" jack is secured well. Don't go crazy tight, just make sure it isn't wiggling around.

Next, open the backplate and see that the pickups are plugged in well. You might just want to unplug each one and the plug it back in sercurely.

It would be useful to know which pins of the 5-pin make the hum happen. You can describe it as a smile from left to right or send a drawing.

Dear Mica,
thank you very much for your tips. Yes the problem is the jack. I cannot fix him enough, because he is a little bit damaged.
I had to solder a contact. Unfortunately the contact of the jack brake. My solution was to put some plastic away that I could still solder the line at the jack. The disadvantage is, that the holding of the jack on one side is not so strong anymore.

Is there a possibility to buy a stereo jack from you and could you send it to Germany? How much does it cost? Or can I buy this stereo jack in Germany directly?

You can order a stereo jack from us, I'm not sure you would have an easy time finding one locally. You can email Valentino or myself with your shipping information and leave your credit card details on our answering machine.
