I auditioned for a spot on my church's worship band yesterday. Between services is not the best time to accomplish much, but was told it it was long enough for an audition. Pretty lively place with not a lot of privacy to be had. After a little head scratching, the music director had me follow him behind the stage, there is room - if you don't mind standing amongst props, old PA gear, furniture and every other whatnot churches collect over the years. The only space large enough for the two of us, a small power mixer and monitor was in the men's room. So, I guess if I'm going to stink it up I'm at least in the right place.
Just as we were setting up he was called and had to run off, promissing that we'd do this after the music portion of the next worship service had ended.
He appears true to his word, but the gear is now on a dolly. I follow him as he weaves his way to the kitchen and begins to set up next to the coffee pots and donuts (quite an improvement from the stacks of toilet paper, mops and clean wipes). Pretty surreal and noisy, kithchens are a popular place on Sundays...
The experience was well worth it, I'm not accustomed to auditioning and this was fairly comical. Although, when I was packing up my bass I was thinking I could have done better if I had a chance to review the charts prior to the audtion, this was a cold read. I said something to that effect and he responded with a very poignant statement, "Ah, but I did get your best." And he's right. That's a lesson that won't be lost on me.

Oh yeah, I made the team.

I'm sure some of you have had some interesting auditions along the way.

Congats Michael! Sounds like it was a very unusual audition. Glad you made the team, now I'll have another reason to visit your church.
