I've had this bass for about 4 years now and I just thought I'd see if there was anything in the file that might be interesting to know. Like if there is a special reason I have a 3 piece maple neck instead of having all the standard lams.

The 3 piece maple neck is standard on a Signature Standard model, and the "SJ" serial# identifies it as such. The purpleheart and maple combo is standard on a Signature Custom. Custom also adds a back laminate to the body.

One could order a custom Standard with the purpleheart neck laminates, but no back laminate - but the instrument would probably still classify as a Standard.

yeah, I had sort of thought of that but according the the main site an SJ model has a neck that is 3 maple + 2 walnut pinstripes. While mine only has 3 maple, but I don't imagine it is really that much of a differance.

Ah - the pinstripes! Those were added to set-necks around 1995, and probably to neck-throughs at the same time.
