The first weekend of this month I traveled down to theaters in Daytona Beach and Coral Springs FL to play bass for a couple of doo wop shows. The Flamingos, The Tokens and The Mystics were all on the same bill. I wasn't even a thought when these guys started their recording careers and wasn't too familiar with their music. The Mystics I can't say I had even heard of, never mind their music, until 2 days before the shows when the Del Vikings backed out last minute. There was also a Buddy Holly tribute act on the bill and backed him too. That was different and fun. There were a few nerve wracking moments but I had fun all in all and gained a new found appreciation for the vocal harmonies these guys achieve. Still. The Flamingos absolutely blew me away with an acapella version of one of their tunes. They dedicated it to our troops and brought down the house. If I wasn't already standing I would have got out my seat to applaud from the backline. Amazing...

I brought my Persuader with me and the sound guys at both venues asked about the bass. I only had to say "Alembic" once to each of them and then they would comment on warm it sounded.

No having to say, "Not Olympic. Alembic" Nice for a change....

Sounds like a great gig! And it brought back some memories of playing in a doo-wop band back in the seventies!

Cool story, JP. I love diving into music that I don't really know. The challenge of learning something new is great.
