The large size of your rig reminds me of something I read the other night. I've been reading a biography of Neil Young. Graham Nash was visiting Neil at his ranch. Neil takes Graham down to the lake where they row out to the middle. All of a sudden they are listening to "Harvest" in stereo. Neil had wired his entire house as the left speaker and his entire barn as the right speaker. |

Yeah, but when the bottles start flying you need something to hide behind, looks the whole band could take cover at once! |

You're kidding, right? I guess someone has to take up the slack now that John Entwistle's "Little Manhattan" isn't around anymore. |

I can sympathize with doing battle with Marshalls. I had to get myself a 612 cab w/ horn and a 215 cab pushed by 500W. It more than keeps up with the double stack I have to contend with on the other side of the drums. In fact, I found the 612 does the job but is a real pain in the ass to move. The other band members call it the anchor for the Queen Mary. Oddly enough, I can fit it in a VW GTI with room left over for my rack and bass........ |

darkbassist, the 2-15s closest to the rack are EVMs and the rest of the 15s are Peavey Blackwidows and the 12s are Blackwidows too. the Boogie 2-10 box has Eden 10s, the rack has a 2 way electronic crossover and a 3 way crossover, a Peavey 800 and a Peavey 1200, I have no effects. David T |

Reminds me of the "wall of sound" that Mr Wickersam made for the Dead. Thats one of the most amazing creations Ive ever read about. I was just reading the book "A Long Strange Trip" and it has some nice, but brief mentions of the work Alembic did for the Dead. The man is far too modest if ya ask me. |

I would agree on both counts. As for the modesty it seems to run in the family. On a thread over in the Alembic Basses and Guitars section Mica writes in reply to a query about a Bose system "Monitorless systems in which the band and the audience hears the same thing is someththing we are familiar with." Talk about understatement, to go monitorless and to give everyone from musicians to first row to folks in the back the same sound was, I believe, one of the main purposes of the Wall of Sound. Alas I was not yet of concert going age when the WOS was in use, but have heard some really rave reviews. Anyone out there ever hear it live? |

Yep, I saw the Dead twice with the wall of sound outdoors at the Iowa State Fairgounds in Des Moines in the early 70s. It worked very well! Each vocal mic had a pair of elements wired 180º out of phase, which eliminated feedback. The boys would sing into one element, but instrument sounds appeared in both and were electronically cancelled. There was a link on the Grateful Dead homepage to archived old newsletters where the system was illustrated and discussed. Mike (Message edited by dadabass2001 on November 22, 2003) |

A friend of mine and I drove to Washington DC, four hours each way, in 1975 to see the Dead. All I can really remember is how amazing visually the sound system was. |

With all the advances in technology since the '70's I'm surprised that this concept hasn't been explored before. I think it makes a lot of sense, but I'm still sceptical. I am really curious to hear how that Bose system sounds. I worked for them for 12 years and they research meticulously anything they do. I had no idea that system was in the pipeline though. Still, I'm sure it sounds tremendous but like everything else Bose it is expensive. And getting musicians to give up their beloved rigs to try something like that I'm sure is prohibitive..... John; I would like to hear more about your experience working for Bose; I find that very interesting. When I went to the web page cited in the other thread I was unable to find any specs on the system; nothing about frequency range, damping factor, etc. that would give one some kind of indication of what to expect. Maybe I was looking in the wrong place; but I came away with the impression that they don't want you to know the specs. |

Dave, My experience working for Bose was overall a very positive one. It was a very good company to work for, especially if one were in Engineering. Unfortunately, I was in Facilities Management. The Bose engineers are given a virtually limitless budget with which to work, however management expected results. More often than not they deliver beyond expectations. They always have top notch engineers as the guy with his name on the building, Dr. Amar G. Bose, considered himself an MIT professor first and foremost. This allowed him to spot the best talent and usually would give the best and brightest a very nice "internship" before they hit the general labor force after graduation. Knowing how to spot good talent and hire and keep it, Dr. Bose has built himself a billion dollar "hobby". We should all have such hobbies, eh? You are right though, you won't find specs on any Bose product. I'm not sure exactly why. It was never explained to me to my satisfaction. I suspect that it has something to do with the ego of MIT and having your name on the side of the building that says no one should have the need to question the specifications as his research was exhaustive and the end results speak for itself. Generally speaking, he's right. Most people don't truly understand the meaning of the specs and misinterpret them anyway. Dr. Bose places a high value on psychoacoustics, or the science of how sound is perceived. Does the ear like what it hears? The layman's ear usually does and I suppose if something is working for you you don't try to fix it. I used to love walking through the engineer's storage area and looking at all the JBL and other competitor's products that were laying around in various stages of dismemberment and trying to think of a way to get some of the more intact stuff out of the building without anyone noticing. Never did though. But it said a lot to me about how serious they were in their research and that they wanted to know what their competition was up to and how they got there. I spent a few years in their retail group before I left and I recall that the store staff were instructed to reply to the customers' questions about specs with, "It will handle just about anything you throw at it." Again, more often than not, they were right. JP |

are we talking about the Bose L1 Cylindrical Radiator here, if so I went and played one today, and the saying that came to mind was "if there's no hi's and there's no low's it must be Bose" the sound was compressed and would not get as loud as I would have hoped, some how I don't think that 24 2" speakers and 2 sub woofer would work in many live applications, and for the $2400 they want for this setup you can get a Mesa/Boogie 400+ with 4-10s and 1-15 for the same price that will blow the Bose system out of the water, Don't get me wrong the Bose system me be great some applications just not for earth moving bass. just my $.02 David T {the loud one} |

I thought the saying was "all highs and no lows, it must be Bose." Anyway, I have no problem whatsoever in believing what you are saying. I was sceptical right from the start because I don't think Bose really considers rock a true form of music. It may well work for a "quieter" type of music such as jazz. Also I think their concept involves the entire band using that system. They have a fusion type band here in Mass. that is going to be using it for a few gigs this weekend. One the guitar players toured with Joe cocker for a few years and I'm sure is very familiar with Pro Audio. I'm real curious to hear his impressions of it. I'm hoping to get down to Worcester and check them/it out for myself. For the money, I'm certain there are many systems that will bury the Bose system. Perhaps for half the money..... If I see the band I'll certainly report back. Paul the John one |
