At last. I did say a few years ago that I would post some photo's of my smart car loaded with my bass rig? Well at long last and after some gently reminding from Bill tgo, I decided to put the stuff in the car today and take some photo's. So here we go. This is a Standard Smart for two Pure with 3 cylinder 600cc engine. Inside is a two mesa boogie powerhouse cabs 1x15 and 2x10, a flightcase containing my Mesa-boogie walkabout with compressor limiter and also my Europa 5 in it's standard case. Oh yes the drivers seat is clear as you can see for me to sit. I'm about 5'11 and the drivers seat is just pushed forward slightly in order to get the cab behind my seat and the passenger seat is much further forward than normal. FYI, the passenger seats on smart cars have more travel since in normal position it is slightly behind that of the driver so to face the passenger you would have to look slightly behind and to the left. Its a great little runner, never had any problems with it. I get it serviced and tested once a year. The engine is actually underneath the two mesa boogie cabs. It's a bit cramped in the front with all that gear inside but for a short trip across town it;s ok. I wouldn't go on a long drive with it packed up so much. Just a shame I can't plug those two cabs into the in-car stereo!!! It is interesting when the punters see me taking my stuff outside and realise it all fits into a smart car...... Jazzyvee | ||

Jazzyvee: I was going to suggest that you return the Smartcar to the dealer as it is defective .. they put the steering wheel in wrong, but Keith beat me to it. I would be cool to get a power converter, wire up the rig, open the hatch, plug in and play! Great Britain's answer to the Bose P.A.S. cylindrical radiator! I'll have to show this to the other guitar player in my band who recently bought a Honda Element to haul all his equipment around. Thanks for the pics. Hi Dave, the hatch does indeed close. I usually cover them with a thick blanket to prevent the corners knocking on the windows as the cabs can bounce a bit during driving and I don't want to crack or smash the glass. in any case showing a pic with the hatch closed wouldn't prove the stuff was in there hahah. Keavin I'm 5'11 so a shortie compared to you. Although my friend's son is 6'4" and is comfortable in the passenger side. Driver side you may find it a little short on leg room. | ||

I'm in process of switching from a '99 Mercury Sable station wagon to a '06 Chevy Cobalt 4-door coupe. I don't have it yet, but I took measurements and should be able to fit all but my largest 1-15 (an old Crate B-15) into the vehicle. Thanks for the pics, Jazzy. Mike | ||

Creatively well done. Personally, I prefer a great deal more armor between myself & the populace at large...better safe than sorry. That thing may not use much in the way of fuel, but if someone hit you, I think it'd crumple like a piece of used tissue paper. Here's hoping the auto gods are looking out over you... | ||

Hi Pas, I went through that thought years ago before I considered buying the car and did a lot of on-line research on the safety aspect of the car, checked the encap site and the crash test statistics etc and as a result I felt confident in buying the car. I have been driving since 1979 and no one has ever run into me on the road, and i have never ran into anyone else so i also figured why is that suddenly gonna change because I have a small car. Anyway so far, so good. In fact like you I've always preferred more metal between me and other idiot's on the road too. I have always had larger cars, by UK Standards anyway, and do have another larger car which I use more often for gigs these days unless I'm carrying a small guitar rig. Nowadays I wouldn't fill the car up like that. Although I've been to Amsterdam and back in my smart car, it's really geared to being a town car and for running about town it's been a great car and saved me shed loads in petrol. Not that I'm a sales person but check this out. How's the fuel consumption Jazzy? I have a Skoda Octavia estate and I carry my rig (2x12, 4x10 and 6 space rack) plus the band's PA speakers - a pair of stand mounted powered 12" wharfedales plus one of the monitors, aswell as 2 basses and a few bags of cables etc. On a recent trip from edinburgh up to Skye, I averaged 58.7 mpg which I thought was amazing considering the weight in the car - all that lot plus mrs J and luggage. Occasionally i need to put the roofbox on to transport the lighting rig too but that brings down the fuel consumption a fair bit to around 50mpg. Graeme | ||

I haven't checked my average for ages but it takes about 7 gallons of petrol and i get usually between 420 to 450 miles out of that on combined town and motorway. I did drive from Brum to Amsterdam and back about 3 yrs ago and did it just over 2 tanks of petrol. The downside of it for me is just that It could do with more power when pulling off and overtaking but no more on the top end. Going up any kind of incline on a motorway slows you down by about 15 to 20mph depending on how steep and who is the passenger. jazzyvee jazzyvee | ||

A hot rodded smart car like those would be great if you kept it looking standard. It's so funny when I pull alongside guys in bigger faster cars at the lights and get off the mark before them. They do absolutely anything to get past me..... Worse on the motorway, coming up behind a car in the fast lane and flashing them to move over, once I get alongside them they realise they are going to be overtaken by the smallest car on the road, they put their foot down. Alright! Monday, I had to go to a rehearsal. But I had to give a ride to a friend of mine, but she insisted that I pick her up with my Smart car. The thing is, were was I going to put my bass? And thats when I discovered. You can put an Exploiter in a gig bag behind the seats, and still keep a lot of free room in the trunk.  The thing is, the pointy end of the Exploiter fits perfectly behind the driver seat, and it stays in position perfectly, because it "seats" in the car just like it would on a leg. Perfectly. Back in the 1970's I could fit my Sunn 215 cabinet in the back seat of my Chevy Vega. Put the Coliseum head in the trunk and my bass in the passenger seat. I still have the Coliseum head but the Vega started smoking the rings in the early 1980's. | ||

I'm always insecure to join some deeper discussions, since I can't express myself good in English. But sometimes we have to make a try, specially when I see good people trying to make good so awkward... It looks like Pierre is just trying to be our social conciousness and we should be glad about that. As a socialist, myself, I'm glad that you are trying to show us all political implications on being wealthy. I solidarize with you on all that, but you must be aware to not behave like the guy who came to a dinner talking about the hunger in world. Why operate on guilty? It reminds me a Luis Buñuel's movie (Via Lactea) where a priest is trying to stop children to laugh saying: "How can you be happy if Jesus died in cross for you?!?"... Wow, man, that's deep! I should commit suicide for feeling good with myself. Pierre-Yves, remember that you're are not the only person here with that concerns. I must believe that all of our brothers here are sensible to social issues. But we're not here to push each others to scaffold. Is ease to tease any Alembic owner to feel bad about having a thousand dollars Bass, but what's the point? How do you feel about having such Bass collection? How many people you could have saved with all this Series you have? I've had to wait 25 years to save enough money to buy a second hand Rogue... My parents were tortured because they were comunists and fought against reactionary dictatorship in Brazil and I've always got mad when met someone trying to makes me feel bad about having a car or banc account. Hal; if I understand your question correctly, then yes, you're within the ballpark. I do not consider discussions of the qualitative differences of aged whiskeys in a musicians forum populated largely by people who play in bar bands, to be the same as a political discussion. And please note that I do spend considerable amounts of time every day on political issues; but not here. I spend hours every day reading and participating in political discussions. I frequently write to and call my Representative, Senators, and President about issues that I deeply care about, including two "strongly worded" letters to the President just yesterday. But not here. I have phone-banked, fund-raised, protested in the streets, and spent money I did not have to spend to try to effect political change in this country. But not here. For me personally, this place here is my refuge from politics. I know from every day experience and participation how emotionally vehement political discussions can be, even among those who have closely similar views. For me personally it can be extremely and deeply heart-achingly painful. And knowing this fact so well, as moderator I do not want this place to be like the other site I spend so much time on. This board has posting guidelines. There are people here whom I like and respect a lot, whom I think of as valued members of this board, with whom I may have some or many political differences. It seems evident to me that generally most of us here value our friendships here to the extent that we find these posting guidelines to be appropriate for this board. It is certainly understandable that you are "not sorry for bringing this action in to question". But this board has posting guidelines, and the vast majority of the members here find it reasonable that these guidelines should be followed. [off topic] Pierre-Yves you should come to Brazil. We got here a viper called "Jararaca Ilhoa" (Bothrops insularis - something like "vipère d'isle") that just exists on a single island near coast and are considered brazilian's most dangerous snake. It is a light brown, very intriguing snake. As they live isolated, they are hermaphrodite. Butantan Institute's resarchers are willing to make a new medicines similar to the Capoten with its venom. Hal, thanks for the compliment, but Dave is fully right. We will quickly dead as a Comunity if we move to some issues that touches us that deep. It is wiser to focus on what makes us closer as we can get very passionate on politics or religion. If guidelines were created to settle earthquakes down, lets stick to them. Anyway, I prefer chating face-to-face if I need to say something strong or controvertial. Some subjects are better trade if you can show your eyes and face expression (specially if you, as me and Pierre, are not fluent on current language). Bill, my snakes are adders, horned adders from Europe (Spain & Greece), they are venomous. Hognose is non venomous, colubrid snake from USA, we bred hognose in europe too. The second link show a copperhead or cottonmouth family snake (Agkistrodon), dangerous, fast & furious, but very nice, who lives in north Mexico. All my animals are captive bred. I give to eat only dead mouse. | ||

Bill, yes when I was 20, three times! One with copperhead from Florida (the most pain I never feel, very painfully bite), one with european adder, one with very dangerous african adder. Nothing, arm and hand with pain and just one finger wich is distorded (?) but no problem to play bass fortunately !! | ||
