Check this out: Click here

All instruments with a serial number request are there (at least almost all) and some numbers were taken from the showcase section.
About 5% of all Alembics made are covered.

Work in progress, will be updated from time to time.

If you want your instrument(s) in the list, please post the serial number and a link to good info/pictures. Thanx in advance!

Have fun!

I was just thinking that Flip's link should be someplace special, FAQ section?, so that it does not get lost in an Archive. What do you think?

Flip, that's a great thing to create! Is your new bass done yet, or is that why you have the free time to do this project (I am bad).

Don't forget 72-01! And, based purely on deduction from various threads, I think Phil's was 72-08 (can you confirm or deny, Mica?)

Hi Mr.#12,

The picture is my PC's screen shot.
Each pictures are thumbneils and original file sizes are vari.( only a few k bit to HQ pict.)
But these thumbneils are easy to check guitar or bass, body style and body woods.
Eary 70's (72' to 75') file has about 70 pict. (/ around 300 products)
Late 70's (76' to 79') file has over 180 pict. (/ around 1200 products)
Over 80's products are massive for such work.
These archives are still incomplete quantitiy or serial number info.

Keavin,

I like it a lot too. I still use this on a lot even though it has flood damage. I plan on getting it restored someday. The electronics still work, but some of the controls are bad. The q switches don't work and one of the volume pots is stuck.

Hey Flip,
You can get a view of my 76 Series 1 from my profile pic! # AE 76 069

I see that you already have the build details, so if you can extract the picture, then that would be cool!
I see also that my bass...and that of Ae 76 079 were both built around the same time, but mine has the abalony and silver inlays.
Both basses were sold to "ROMCO".I think??
I'd love to know who this company is/was??
Since they are both "export " models...mine is in Scotland.........and the other in the U S!!
I'm confused
I'd just love to know the history of my bass!

Using Flip's chart & various posts, I've been trying to figure out the first 25 Alembics - what they were and who they were built for (what can I say - I'm an archivist, & I have way too much spare time). So far I have this:
01 - bass for J. Casady
02 - guitar for B. Weir
03 - guitar for J. Garcia
04 - no info
05 - no info
06 - guitar for J. Garcia
07 - no info
08 - bass for P. Lesh
09 - no info
10 - guitar
11 - no info
12 - bass for J. Bouchard
13 - guitar for J. Garcia
14 - bass for S. Clarke
15 - guitar for N. Young
16 - bass
17 - guitar for J. Casady
18 - no info
19 - ? for M. Hart
20-24 - no info
25 - guitar for J. Garcia
Can anyone fill in any blanks?

Peter

HI Peter ,
I remember a Female Bass player that had an early Alembic Bass that might fit in there some where. It had a resemblance to #12 !!!!! I saw her play numerous times with a band fronted by LISA KINDRED called" ASCENSION" and other local musical groups . I don't remember for sure but her nick name might have been " Mouse ???" I Do not know her real name . I saw them many times at MARX MEADOWS in the "GOLDEN GATE PARK" in San Francisco. I also remember them when they came to record at Leo De Gar Kulka's recording studio ( Golden State Recorders) Where I was an Audio Engineering student at the College for Recording Arts at the time , I was present at the session. This would have been around 1975 or so. IT WAS A KOOOL BASS !!!!!! that I do remember !!!.

The list is shaping up nicely! But just a couple of things.... I was always under the impression that Stanley's first bass was from 1973. It had PF5 electronics. I don't think it would be on this early list.

Also, I played 72-17. It was NOT a bass!

Thank you, Michael - Val's post said 17 was Jack's, and I just assumed it was a bass (even knowing he started out as a lead guitarist). That's exactly the kind of help I was hoping for.
So, what can you tell us about 72-17? Shape, scale, woods, circuitry, etc? Don't suppose you have pictures, eh?

Well 72-17 is shaped just like mine. A small standard. It does not have the trapezoidal pickups, but the electronics are the same as mine and number 15. No filters, but powered electronics. The woods in the bass were darkish I remember, but I am not sure what they were now. I remember it being a long scale and it may have been a baritone.

When I saw the guitar it was for sale at a vintage guitar show in Dallas, Tx. The guitar did not reside in Tx, but was with a vendor's booth from Ohio. The person selling it also confirmed that it was once Jack's so I guess it's possible. He also stated that the top wood used on the guitar was found as a piece of driftwood from the San Fransisco bay. I doubt it, but you never know. That's all I remember. I should have taken pictures!!

I've never taken it any further than this.
http://alembic.com/club/messages/395/37522.html?1174575335

I was at one time keeping track of all instruments under 30 to see if I could identify the actual number but I've talked to a couple of people who worked there at the time including Rick Turner. They remember the guitar quite well due to the density of the birds eye and said it could easily have left the shop without a number. There was some story about the top and a piece of furniture and I have a friend who has a photo of it hanging at the shop in process. I'll get it over to the shop one of these days.
