Very nice bass! I saw my first Alembic when I was 16 years old. My family was stationed in Panama and I had just started playing bass with a band. We played a talent show in December 1977 and the house band was the Air Force Band at Howard AFB. The Master Sergent playing bass with the band had this strange looking instrument that just looked great. I had a Gibson bass with me and I walked up to him and asked about the bass. That is when he said it was an Alembic Series 1. I wanted one after then! (but it took about 23 more years before I was able to buy my first one!) | ||

That is a nice one as well. Mine has the birdseye maple top and I believe a Koa core with a peroba rosa back. The neck appears to be maple and walnut like yours. It has some player wear and a repaired crack at the scarf joint. Not perfect but just what I was looking for and at a good price! Came with the power supply and 2 cables. Not original case but it works just fine and is like new.  | ||

My first Alembic was a similar S1 to yours. As you guys know, these long scale S1 are the classic Alembic body. I miss that bass immensely, and I was a dam fool to part from it. I sold it at a time I was entering Grad-School in my late 20's and I thought there wouldn't be enough time for playing. After cutting through the hype of what I thought would be something of a time consuming educational siege, and I realized I was not just any fool, I was a "GOT-DAM" fool to sell it. To this very day, I still have "moments of clarity" wishing I hadn't sold my first Alembic S1. You never forget your first one... and that's what bothers me the most. I have to keep myself from thinking about it, just to stay positive for the day... (this day is to the Lions-Den now...)  One thing I do remember my first Alembic; I got somewhat a feeling of alienation from even my musical peers; for my bass was so beautiful, it truly did invoke others insecurities "big-time" and which in some cases the Alembic was attracting overt envious, and grievous attention. Deep down inside, I believe every Alembic owner has to be more aware of these social problems. So, as with anything of value, I think equals a percentage, or degree of envy. You are going to have to cope with this in a very serious way and it's not easy because there are elements of envy which are extremely intense. I remember so many examples and I am sure it will happen to you (if it didn't already happen...). After owning an Alembics for so many years now, I am at a point where -- I am more aware of situation of the folly of envy. I compartmentalized it when it sticks it's ugly head. I have no time for others insecurities, I refuse to take ownership of this foolishness. People with great things, are simple. They are "just people" with simply great things. So, selling my first Alembic may had been my lesson one and first lesson of my insecurities. I thought sound was not that important, and besides, I felt I could always buy another Alembic anytime I wanted.... BEEP!!! "WRONG ANSWER" Finding an Alembic don't only constituent having the money.... I am looking for a discontinued amp right now. I miss my first S1!!! A band came to my small college in North Carolina and I saw that the guy had an Alembic when they were about to do sound check. I was all excited at that point and even more so when he told me to strap it on and play it so he could hear how he sounded out front! The first thing I played on it (which is the first thing I play on every Alembic I try) was that little bass solo part John McVie did on "The Chain." I was totally blown away. I was finally playing the bass of my dreams! You have to remember that back then you did not see Alembics everywhere and finding one was even tougher. I probably did not see/play another one for over 10 years after that, but what a great feeling it was for a (then) 18 year old kid. (Message edited by dluxe on December 06, 2009) | ||

Sorry Robert, You know more about this bass than I do, but I TTA with your ideas about the wood, but I think the neck may be Maple and Purpleheart. I have some images in the file from 2002, and the peghead veneers are Zebrawood. The original build card is absent from the file, however. | ||

Thank you so much for checking Mica. The more I look at the neck I can see the Purpleheart wood. One day I'll get the bass back to the factory for a checkup. |
