my first wife was working a lot and very agressive or angry when I buyed 2 alembics with MY money in 2 years. My actually wife is not working, she said "do what you want my darling, your work for you and our home"
;o))
Two positions, two wife, two mentality, two economic-social-religious origins.

I prefer my actual situation :-)
Are you afraid by your wife ?

Every bonus check for 20+ years was spent on vacations, fun stuff for her and then eventually the kids - almost on anything but "me". And then when the time was right I applied "The James Malthumb Sure Fire How To Get Your Bass By Trading Up" approach, that helps ease the burden.

So, the other night I'm headed out to a gig. While loading my truck I'm making those old man noises lifting my Acme B-2, my wife looks at me and says, "can't we find you something lighter"?
I really, really love my wife. Looking for a "neo" loaded cabinet(s)now. My last Alembic, she bought me for my birthday.

Even though I earn the income for our family, the wife runs the household and I would never make a major purchase without her approval. That being said, she understands how important music is to me and she has actually ENCOURAGED me to make many of my purchases.

I have to add that a couple of years ago my wonderful wife told me "you really should have an old Martin" and let me get a 1953 D-28.

My Awesome Wife is an Artist so I am lucky that she wants me to pursue my creative desires. All her siblings are musical and she has also started taking voice lessons. She is sympathetic to my musical urges , so it's instruments & gear for me. I am a lucky man .

I bought a dirt bike 2 years ago & have broken my leg & my thumb in 2 seperate crashes. After the 2nd crash that broke my thumb I told my wife I was selling the dirt bike & wanted to use the money to buy a new Alembic. She asked what it cost, & after a huge gasp from her, she was OK with me buying it! It was worth it to her to get me off the dirt bike! I originally wanted a SC Brown bass which was $1000 cheaper than my Signature, but when my wife saw the pictures Mica sent of the Signature she told me I should get that one because it was prettier! I took her advice & have no regrets! She even named my bass "Coco" for the cocobolo wood it is made with!

Kenn,

If you want a really light, but accurate and loud amp, check out:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/composite-nidacore-fearful-15-6-1-build-732771/

The fEarful is, IMHO, one of the best cabinets available for your Alembic, and one made with Nidacore composite would be around 30 lbs and able to put out very serious SPL, like one of them equivalent to 2 Acme B-2s.

Actually, now that I think this through, Erixxst, you need (MUST!) know the answer to THIS question that all of us have heard:

"WHY do you need ANOTHER bass?!?!?"

"WHY do you need ANOTHER bass?!?!?"

That was an easy one for me Joey. Back in 1995 I managed to convince my better half that I needed to move to a five string which resulted in my Epic. Jumping to 2004 I managed to convince her that I need a five string fretless so I was able to custom order my Rogue.
The '07 MK deluxe was meant to be my 50th birthday present but the pound was so strong against the dollar at the time that it made way more sense to buy it 4 years early :-)

My wife, along with the rest of my family and friends, has been 100% supportive of building a guitar in memory of my dad.

Bradley, thanks for the link, I somehow missed it over there. The builder is in the Hartford area and I'm in R.I. so I think that I just might give him a call. I generally don't have a problem lifting my cabinet. I just recently bought a Shuttle 9.0 to retire the 50# rack. A 35# cab with a return to a 15" speaker has my interest though. I'm almost 59 and that could add a few more years to my giging days.

Ditto's on the heads up re: the fEarful Nidacore build Brad! Im about 15 miles from where the build is taking place and I'd love to hear 'em as well!!!!

Sorry for the hi-jack... My way of dealing w/ Senior Mgmt. is as follows: I buy my wife a guitar every couple of years, and then lay into her as to why she never plays.

My mom lamented for years that she couldn't help me out with money to buy a really nice bass at the NAMM show, where there are not only some unbelievable one-of-a-kind basses on display but many are also for sale at ridiculous discounts.

So that never happened but what she couldn't do in life she managed in the hereafter through my inheritance.

I've wanted an Alembic since seeing Stan the Man, Alex Blake and Tom Fowler in the 70's (I'm 56). I got "Mary" with my mom's initials at the 12th fret on an otherwise blank neck. She's still my reference point.

My girlfriend had no problem with that!

My sweetie decided two years ago that she was going to... (drumroll, please)... play bass. All of a sudden, there was no such thing as "having too many basses." Now she can use any of "my" basses that she wants, so how could she complain? Talk about lucky! Of course, now when she plays bass I am forced to play guitar. I think I may need another one of those...

I sold a Martin, a bass, and some other random music related gear. As long as my hobbies are self-sustaining and don't come out of the "general fund" too much, everybody's happy. That and I just bought her a macbook.

I should be picking up my Orion tomorrow.

My other hobbies are Nordic skiing in which I serve as a coach (and get to keep the additional funds I bring in to the family) and cycling. When I first discussed purchasing a used Distillate, the question my wife asked was, "how much does it cost compared to one of your bikes or your ski gear." Given that each of the four bicycles I own go for between $3,000-$8,000, dropping $1,800 on an Alembic to complement the 73' EB-3 I had been playing seemed quite reasonable to her. So my advice is...develop a second hobbie that's even more expensive than collecting Alembics. The cost of an additional bass now and then doesn't seem so bad (haha).

Sam - I understand - I looked at your profile pic and Mary is quite beautiful. My 11-year old daughter totally agreed. She wants one too - does Alembic make electric violins with an omega cut? (maybe when she's older).

All my friends asked the same thing about "permission". And I tell them, she picked up the cash at the bank --- LOL She was pretty impressed when she first saw my Rogue. She saw it as something that would not loose value (especially buying it used). My Rickenbacker has been a good purchase too!

And Hammer - the bikes do cost $$$ You into MTB or road. My son an I ride mountain. This past weekend, we went backpacking with our Scout troop and had biked the day before. We locked my bike in one of the other dad's van. It was funny that my bike was worth more than the van.

Stephen, thanks to you and your daughter for liking Mary. Come out to the Northern California gathering on April 16 and check out all the unbelievable Alembics and great folks, if you can. I went last year and it was absolutely fantastic.

Stephen - It's road only for me. Thought it was the safer way to go and raced crits., road races, and time trials for many years without an incident...until last summer. Sprinting up a hill (yes we actually do have hills in Minnesota) in a race for King of the Mountains points and all of sudden a 6-foot long 2" diameter pipe is rolling right in front of me having fallen off a passing truck. Jumped it with the front wheel but the back came down on it and I went down over the top of handlebars. Bike had minimal damage but I tore the meniscus in both knees. On the bright side of things I got to know my Distillate a lot better over the next 4-weeks or so while I recovered from surgery.

I agree with the costs of the bikes (they're all carbon and titanium). I never added up the costs of the four I own, but I do believe that if I had not purchased them I'd be playing a highly customized Series II rather than a used Distillate

Getting her to agree to me buying my first 4 Alembics wasn't an issue. I bought them all used and never paid more than $1,900 for any of them. Bought the 1st one, traded it and cash for the 2nd one. Paid $475 for the 3rd one. Sold two other basses to pay for the 4th one.

Now, the 5th and 6th ones were different. Number 5 is the one I bought from Stanley. I simply didn't tell her about it until after it arrived. Since it has a great back-story, including one of our early dates being at a Clarke-Duke Project concert where Stanley played that bass within touching distance of us, I was forgiven. Number 6, which was custom ordered before, but arrived a couple days after #5, was a different story. Just had to keep reminding her of the size of my bonus that year.
