I noticed it, too (like how could you miss a 1977 new,old stock S1 guitar or bass?!?). Amaranth is purpleheart, right? If so, the top and back look like they have mellowed exquisitely. The zebrawood laminate is very unique and very cool. I'd love to do something like that with a bass, if I build another. Looking at this guitar seems strange. It has little appointments (i.e. chrome tuners) that remind you it's a vintage Alembic - but you usually see those things on instruments that show their age!! This one looks brand new, except for the mellowing of the wood color. I guess that's what they looked like... Cool. Bill |

Yes, according to the Alembic site, Amaranth is Purpleheart. And yes, I really liked the zebrawood laminate too. Here's one of my favorite zebrawood ideas: http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_riff.html |

That's really striking!! I've looked at that feature, but never noticed the side view. Imagine what a zebrawood laminate could do for an elbow cut! |

What zebrawood can do in an elbow cut - well this should give you a good idea: http://alembic.com/club/messages/411/4027.html?1082391520 - just go down a few messages from the 3 string EUB. |

Thanks. It does just what I'm looking for! I think I'd like to see it put it together with a straighter grained or lighter colored top. |

Why can't I find a bass like that? That is really a beautiful time capsule instrument. The finish is just stunning. I am sure it is a great guitar. |

I agree Michael. I don't play guitar and wouldn't have a use for one; but that one sure would look great in the living room. |

Well, Michael, at least you have your standards... when I first saw this, I was slightly concerned that it might cause you to switch from bass to guitar :-) What an amazing find. Hope it ends up in appreciative hands. |

Well, I guess that depends on who spent what for his Skylark when the flooring around the tub was already buckling down to the substructure..... after all.... Harmony is the name of the game...No worries, I'm laying the new tile next week..... Believe me, the youngster inside is having a full blown tantrum over not putting the bathroom off and bidding on this guitar....Ahhhh to be irresponsible again!..... On second thought....Nawwww, it took a lot of lumps to get to where I am now... Wanna see the scars? |

I've tossed my hat into the ring for the Series I on ebay, but with one Alembic currently in the making, and rumblings of building another, I don't think I will be able to go the distance without backing from Senior Management. And while she's quite the good sport regarding my GAS, I fear that the bidding could escalate to the point of a hostile takeover! If it skyrockets beyond my maximum bid...well, alas. Just seems to be a once in a lifetime chance to own something so old...and yet so perfect. We'll see. Jonathan |

Hi brothers, The bidding on the NOS Series I guitar on ebay keeps going up. I'm currently the high bidder and, at $3000, the reserve still hasn't been met. Doesn't look too good, though I'm having a real problem letting this opportunity slip away. What are the chances of something like this EVER coming up again...27 years old, from back in the day...and untouched? I feel like an archaeologist who stumbled upon a newly discovered tomb of the Pharoahs...what a treasure! Jonathan |

My wife began asking very probing questions about this particular guitar and, after I told her what I would be willing to spend, she confessed that she had been bidding on it as a Father's Day present. Outbid by my own wife! I never told her about my initial bids, figuring she'd explode at the idea of my buying another guitar just months after getting the Orion and still waiting for my custom Alembic and Resurrection guitars to be finished. She never ceases to amaze me. Anyway, she came clean and so did I. She e-mailed the seller and found out the reserve was $5000. I can't justify that kind of money on something sight unseen. Hopefully it will find a good home...I know I have. Jonathan |

Sellers with $5K reserves can change their tunes when the bidding ends at $4200. It was at $3900 last I looked, and if you're willing to go up a bit from there, you may not be out of the running yet. |

So what happened? Did you get it Doc? Did anyone at the club happen to get it? This was such a nice story, I have to know how it ended. |

Jorge, My wife and I both decided to let it go. The guitar wound up fetching $5000. Hard to say what it's really worth - likely not that much, purely from a production standpoint, but perhaps more from a uniqueness perspective. In the end, it was too much to spend on something sight unseen. I'll probably regret it down the line, but...oh well. Jonathan |

Jonathan (and others who have followed this instrument...) I am very new to the club and an over due introduction will follow shortly. The Series I ended up in my hands... I just couldn't resist this unique timepiece - and the story about this treasure forgotten in a small shop in Canada... I have just recently been introduced to the world of Alembic - and I am completely fascinated with the company, the people and their wonderfull creations as well as this whole Alembic-eco-system!!! (The Alembic Club is already my homepage...) Jonathan, if you and your wonderful wife ever get to the San Francisco bay area - it would be my pleasure to let you try out the guitar! Just let me know!! (You could combine it with a visit to Santa Rosa!) (Message edited by northlight on May 24, 2004) |

Christian, Thanks for providing a sense of 'closure' to this little adventure. Having checked your bio, I can't begin to say how happy I am that the guitar ended up in the hands of someone with an obvious appreciation for what it is...and what it represents. My wife and I are planning a trip to the land of the fault lines in the near future. I would love to take you up on your generous offer. And, if you ever get tired of playing that beauty, I'll give you fifty bucks for her! LOL. Play hard...play true. Hopefully our paths will cross at some point. All the best, Jonathan |
