Hey guys & gals, I am selling a 95 essence with signature electronics and led's, with tulipwood top, walnut core on E-bay right now. I am having a family emergency and I am forced to sell some prized possesions. I am selling some other non-alembic stuff also. If I sell some othr stuff first I may not need to sell this. The other reason I am considering letting this go is that I miss the big body shape of Alembic, I am hoping to get my hands on a SI soon, any one know of any let me know. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3726265582&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 Best wishes, -Ed |

Ed- There are a couple newly listed S1 basses at basspalace.com. There's also an ad on bassgear.com for a 77 S1 living in FL at the moment. Your bass is very nice, but I think the auction is showing that you're priced a bit high. Too bad you can't advertise it as an SC or MK with an Essence body since it has the signature electronics in it. Maybe it's a misconception on my part, but I think the Essence is considered one of the lower end models. Good luck! -Bob |

I think it would be appropriate to describe a bass like Ed's as "Custom" and then describe the elements (built off the Essence chassis because of its flexibility, upgraded electronics, etc.). I think someone once long ago discussed how they base their custom builds off the Essence because it has fewer standard features, allowing one to choose what you really want and pay on an ala carte basis. I tried this with a couple of custom configurations I've thought of and found that the best (most cost-efficient) base model to work from depends entirely on the specific features you want (also the particular monthly special in effect that month). For instance, my new bass is a MK Deluxe (because you get Coco Bolo standard), but it has S2 electronics and several other upgrades that track pretty closely with the S2 model - but for considerably less. It got me everything that I wanted. I would not be reluctant to use the "custom" designation to allow for the best description of any Alembic bass that is different from a "standard" model (to the extent they happen very often). The way Alembic manufactures instruments, there are literally no "low-end" products. Just more and less complex and more and less different. All are manufactured using the same processes using the same combinations of handcraft, machinework and testing. Compare that to other manufacturers whose models within the same series could be produced in different facilities or even countries! Sorry for the book, but I feel strongly about this. It's a quality issue that accentuates some important things that are special about Alembic. Bill |

I agree with Bill that it's fine to use "custom" to describe this particular bass - it was in fact custom made for Stoney, and the serial number uses a "C" as the designator. Even from Alembic's perspective, it's a "custom bass" |

It's close to what I am looking for, but still a little more than I want to pay. Outside of the price, my other concern would be the walnut body. I looked around and none of the pages that talk about the tone impact of body woods really say how walnut is different from the typical mahogany body. If anyone has any 'technical' comments on the sound of a walnut body, could you please post? Thanks! -bob |

Bob, From what I've read in various threads, I believe a walnut body will give a warmer, bassier sound. The mahogany is more nutral. As always this stands to be corrected by the more knowledgeable members. I don't know if it's fair to compare this to a SC model, but with Signature electronics, purpleheart lams and the walnut body, I think you're getting a pretty good alternative. If I thought I could get away with it this bass would be more than nice to own Mike |

Yep, it seems like something between a signature standard and deluxe. Ordered from the right base and catching the right monthly special (Free LEDs or 15-20% of base toward options), I'd expect to pay about $3K for this bass new, maybe a bit more. Some of the cost there is for the wood choices, which are personal and probably more cosmetic than functional. The other big upcharge is the LEDs which are a really neat option, but I don't look much and play in the dark less. Without confidence that I would like the sound of walnut, I'd probably pay $1800 for this instrument and expect that I could get at least $1600 for it pretty quickly if I decided to get my own custom built after getting used to the feel of medium scale. I am watching a couple of other eBay basses at the moment, and if I don't get one of those, I will probably make this offer to Ed. That Persuader five is really the closest thing to perfect as a start for me. -Bob |

Ed; I just emailed you about your Essence, but my note was bounced with a "mailbox full" "unavailable service" message. Do you have a different email address from the one shown on your profile? |
