Since there are some Hyak fans here, and since a lot of us have been following the restoration of the Hyak in the factory to customer section, I thought I would mention that there is a nice looking Hyak fretless on ebay. Like the restoration bass, this one was also owned by Steve Fossen.

The same guy owns both basses. He has a few of these instruments. He and I have been in touch about Hyak instruments for a while now. He is a true Hyak fan.

I too bought another Hyak off of EBay last week. It had a low buy it now price, so I did! It should be arriving on the 7th. Check it out.

I got it... it's all mine!!! I was suprised to see a Hyak Fretless on Ebay of all places. $900 dollars is a steal, especially since it was previously owned by Steve Fossen. Not as good a deal as "dela217" but a sweet buy, never-the-less. I'll let you all know how it plays, sounds, feels, and smells as soon as I get it.

Funny you should mention smell. The Hyak instruments have a definate smell to them when you first take them out of the case. Not a bad smell, but sort of like fresh tobacco. It must be the finish they used, all of the Hyaks I have met had that smell.

You know, I'm beginning to think I should post all the pictures of the Hyaks I've owned. I had no idea there was so much interest in these basses! A couple years ago I contacted a former owner and he sent me an unfinished neck and unfinished body with neck attached. Unfortunately, the body is starting to delaminate, but would still make a totally playable Hyak. The neat thing about it, is that it doesn't have the scroll (which I prefer, but neat just to see a different body style).

Dela217, when that case arrives, see if there are any remnants of my name painted on the case. :-) Mine that fit the blue case was a rosewood body with tear drop inlays. It would be too funny if you ended up with two of my old instruments!

That's a good one, squire, I've never actually seen someone manage to post their error message before, with text styling no less!

Rob - It could be your old bass! It seems like some sort of rosewood body, or could be cocobolo. As far as tear drop inlays go, it has them, but only at the 12th fret. Or do you mean inlaid in the body? I had sort of a strange Hyak once. It was one of the first ones. It was walnut, and on the back of the body near the scroll, had a fancy inlay. It was sort of a cross between a wooden tear drop and a paisley. Very cool! It was serial number 13. I know you like that sort of stuff.

Squirefan - Great looking bass! I notice you are using the 1/4 in jack in the photo. If the bass does not have a power supply, you can use an Alembic power supply and it works perfectly. The Hyak power supply is 36 volts, where the Alembic is 18. I have not had any problems yet, and I have used Hyaks off and on since the late 70's with Alembic power supplies. It gets old putting 4 9-volt batteries in that bass! Besides, that bass has the side LED's! You need a power supply.

Hey Squire! You look good with that bass! I hear it has side LEDs. Where are they? :-) I'm so happy you like it! Take care of it for me.

Rob - I thought that you mentioned that bass had the LED's! Sorry about the confusion, I must have been thinking about one of your others. If you post some pics of your Hyaks, I will too. Although you have seen all of mine!

Ah! So it does have LED's. I am jealous. I wish my Hyak had them. I have gotten sooo used to the LED's on my Alembics.

Put a small string of Christmas lights on it. You can even get the kind that will flash along with the beat of the music. :-)
