...and wouldn't ya know,
...it's from Texas.

http://cgi.ebay.com/2004-ALEMBIC-FAKE-COPY-ELAN-4-STRING-BASS-/260828429223

So the seller knows its a fake, but he's using Alembics reputation to sell his cheap bolt-on,
he calls it a copy which couldn't be much further from reality.

The ad is close to fair, though the word "copy" certainly doesn't apply. The only legitimate thing to do here is to scrape off the sticker and sell it as an unbranded instrument. Odd that the ad claims to know the year of manufacture, I wonder if this seller knows something of the actual origin of these instruments?

> > > > I totally agree with bsee. While the seller seems to know -at least it seems- the difference between an actual Alembic and "this", he did no further effort than the "copy" word (which is NOT the case.. I'd dare the seller to find a legitimate Alembic that look like "his" as the copied model) to warn the possible buyer on the scam. Sanding off the headstock would be the honest way, I agree, but then... so much to ask for, isn't it? > (Second try at replying by the mail program on my mac. Last one was that of above, which showed those ">>>" signs before and after the text. Anyone knows why does it happens?) > >

Who would buy this? That's the worst listing ever.

Getting a "listing removed" message now, so all is well again.

I'm certain I talked to this seller last night. I told him he should take the name off and offer as a no-name. If he wanted to tell the story of how he removed the name "Alembic" because he was an awesome person and would have better karma, I told him that I wouldn't object.

Sorry Juan, I use unix for email, and the reply function works fine for me. Maybe a mac user will chime in to help.

Steve (thumbsup) - there is a bit of history with the fakes in the Southern states, as one can surmise on this page in the Must Reads section.

Juan, I don't think the "> > >" is an inherent Mac thing. All my stuff is Mac, and it hasn't show up on my posts.

So far.

...ooops, it didn't occur to me that without that bit of history my remark could be seen differently.

Thanks adriaan for clearing that up so quickly.
