There are three, count 'em three Alembic guitars currently on e-bay! A rare occurrence indeed:

The latter day Electrum with the set neck and Seymour Duncan Pickups that's been around a few times, but this time with no reserve;

A Tribute, complete with a Steal Your Face decal!

A quilted maple Orion. The seller might be a little disappointed on this one. He is starting it at $1000 - certainly a fair price - but lists that it sells for $3200 and the 5A Quilt top is a $1000 option and has other "options" like active pickups, dual truss rod, oval inlays, ebony fretboard etc. (All of which are standard). He claims it sold originally for at least $4200 (doubtful), but with a no reserve auction, this might be a good deal for someone.

I bought the Tribute...what a beatiful guitar! I had to remove the decal to reveal the wood. I'm a big Garcia fan, but a decal on wood that good seemed a travesty to me. If I want something there, I'll have Garcia's likeness engraved on an oval of ebony. Anyone here good at that type of work?

Well hi, JoyFulGirl31. Welcome to the club. I kind of am figuring you bought the guitar using your significant other's account. Nice guitar! Alembic does the type of work you inquire about. Give Mica or Susan a call. What ever you do, do have fun, Andrew.

FYI to potential buyers...

I got a pic of the Electrum control cavity and forwarded it to Mica. The response was that the guts aren't Alembic either. I am guessing that Alembic guts would run something in the vicinity of $700 for the parts, plus or minus.

I'm interested in the Orion guitar, I'm a Fender Strat Ultra user at the moment. Can anyone offer any advice on the clean tone as a comparison?
Also does it sound beefy and mellow when overdriven with a ProCom Rat pedal?

Jazzyvee,

My first Alembic was an Orion, which I still have. It is capable of giving crystal clear tones through my Marshall when run clean. Add a little chorus and you won't believe your ears. It also delivers a very heavy punch when playing through a distorted/overdriven amp - as much if not more than my Les Paul. I just got rid of my Rat Pedal, and I can tell you that you won't be disppointed. My second Alembic has Skylark electronics, but I'm thinking of building my next one with the same pickups found on the Orion...they're great! I also love the Orion for its electronic simplicity - bass, treble, volume, p/u selector. Not enough to confuse even the simplest of minds. I swear I don't know how the Series guys do it.

The Orion was my introduction to Alembic - an amazing instrument in every respect. That quilted one on ebay looks like a beauty. The seller was crazy not to place a reserve price, as the guitars, unlike the basses, don't seem to draw as much attention. I bought my Orion on ebay as well - absolute mint condition. It was the second auction and I was still the only bidder. You may get this for a song!

Regards,

Jonathan

Now that I've been through all the Factory to Customer threads, I can see that Alembic does some really beautiful inlay work on the custom side. I think my first step now is to get the SF-2 as Bill recommended, for...um...Easter? Then perhaps the inlay stuff for my Birthday ;-) Right now I'm feeling so spoiled that I'm embarrased. Shame on me for wanting more! As one of you guessed...yup, my wife's account was used. There are two reasons that I wanted an Alembic so much. 1) I wanted a guitar that looked like Jerry's since I was 13 and saw Tiger for the first time. 2) In a jazz band that I played in, the bass player played an Alembic and his sound clearly equaled the tone quality of the best instruments in the band (including my particularly fine Trombone!) I loved the Alembic instruments since the first day I heard that bass in 1979.
