If it were a right hander, I'd be all over it. I think the hole in the headstock is just to be able to hang it on a wall. Who knows, there may be some functional issue that kept it from ever being completed. Back then there was no true S1/S2 designation, still w/out a master vol. I'd say this one was destined for the S1 control set. Looks like lacewood on the back, and purpleheart for the board?!?
