Hi alembicians, I am seeking serious wisdom & guidance with a torturing dilema of mine. I have a beautiful Series I, s/n 76-265, w/a new cable, and hardshell case. It has been a lifelong quest of mine to own a legend like this, but after visiting Alembic, I've recently come to terms with my physical limitations and have considered letting this beauty one go for a Stanley Clarke Brown Bass because of the shorter scale. I seek your counsel and advice on suggestions to resolve my situation.  | ||

When I was new to Alembics (in 1977) I went through this exact problem. My first Alembic was a large bodied bass much like yours. I LOVED it, but it was just too large. I ended up swapping it for a short scale series 1 and never looked back. I say do it! But, I would hold out for another series 1. | ||

Hi perryw, Do you have any pictures of 03BB12970 to post?, I'm curious to see what you've purchased, and I'm sure there are others interested as well. I couldn't quite figure out what you purchased based on the serial number. Also, you asked if I was "interested in purchasing", do you have a short scale Series I bass, or a Stanley Clarke Brown Bass for sale? Please let me know... Thanks, Darrell | ||

Darrell - The serial number almost always identifies the model. 03 BB 12970 is a 2003 Brown Bass, serial number 12970. Only Series 1 / Series 2 basses have no descriptive letter(s) in their serial number. When you're considering values for your sale, you may not be aware that a bass of your vintage could have an electronic noise problem, and that fixing that problem is about a $1500 job. This makes trading for a short scale Series 1 of similar vintage a pretty fair deal. It also means that although a Brown Bass would be a step down the model line from the Series 1, that a nearly new Brown Bass is probably worth the smae or more on the open market in comparison to a later 70s Series 1. It's hard to say, since used Brown Basses seem to be more rare on the market. If you're really looking for a Brown Bass, you're quite lucky to have found someone willing to let one go. If this deal doesn't work out and that Brown Bass is for sale, I suspect that you will find several buyers here for that as well. | ||

bsee, Thanks for your awesome insight, I just haven't been around enough to know the difference. When I payed a momentous visit to Alembic, Mica pointed out that my electronics had been upgraded from the originals. I am interested in seeing perryw's bass, I asked for pics and I am eagerly awaiting. This may just work out after all.  |
