Newly listed is a nice MK five Signature Standard (looks like a deluxe with superb walnut instead of cocobolo as it has top and back as well as PH neck lams) at $3K. This is a pretty balance omega body (not a K model). If it were medium scale, I would probably be telling you about it in the showcase section and waiting for the FedEx truck. Also, the ziricote Series 2 five is back again @ $5K, for those who were intersted in it three months ago. It was sold the day before I was going to be at the shop, so I just missed the opportunity to provide a hands-on review. |

Bob, it is confusing, isn't it? The Signature Standard doesn't have back laminates, but the deluxe has the three purpleheart lams in the neck. So I wonder if this started as a Deluxe and they opted for the walnut body laminates. Question was, were the laminates an upgrade or a downgrade. I'd say it looks more like superb flame walnut than burl walnut, which is a big difference in price (especially on a big body like the MK). I wonder about that S2 - did someone return it, or just not come through on the lay-away finances. :-) EffClef |

My recollection from when I was out there was that it was already shipped, so I don't think it was a layaway deal. Whether the resale was for financial reasons, or because of the bass itself, I couldn't say. There are still an awful lot of people with GAS, so even that wouldn't mean anything. On the King, the MJ serial number says it started as a standard, so that's how they are advertising it. There are four differences between deluxe and standard models 1. cocobolo top vs. choice of standard woods 2. cocobolo back vs no back laminate 3. brass backplate vs. plastic backplate 4. PH laminates vs. walnut pinstripes in the neck I can't say for sure about the backplate from the photo, but it might be plastic. The top and back look like superb walnut with the crotchy grain, but it otherwise has the specs of the deluxe. On the upgrade vs. downgrade question, superb walnut is listed as an $800 option compared to standard tops, where cocobolo is $1000. On the other hand, going from cocobolo to superb walnut on a deluxe is supposedly still an $800 upcharge per side per the configurator. Regardless of all that, they are two very nice looking used basses available at seemingly reasonable dealer prices. I would love to be able to get to Seattle to play on both of them before making my customer order, as it would clear up some detail for me, but that's not going to happen. |
