Superbass has a nice '91 Essence on Ebay. It's all Maple with chrome hardware and with the addition of a Q switch and a Hipshot D tuner. There's also a custom inlay at the 12th fret. This is a nice looking Essence with no reserve.

I owned that bass for about three years. It is in very good condition and sounds great you could not go wrong with that one.

In the Q&A the seller says that the S-I has a hollow body. I don't pretend to know much about the Series instruments. Could that be true or is he maybe just talking about the control cavity?

Rich,

I'm the owner of the Series I bass, and the top half of the bass (not the control cavity) is hollow. If you tap on the wood you can hear it resonate. Not only does this improve the sound it reduces the weight. If you have any other questions let me know.

That often happens on no-reserve eBay auctions that are getting near their end and not showing enough interest. The top bid was in the $800s at the cancellation, and the rest of the listing suggests they were looking for something close to $2K. It's a tough gamble to let it go and hope for a last-minutes bidding war.

If you're interested in this bass, I would recommend making contact with Superbass to get the scoop. They didn't say that the reason for cancellation was that the bass is no longer for sale, so it could still be available.

Well, I'm not personally interested in the bass; but it somehow doesn't seem right to list a no-reserve auction, receive bids, and then pull the auction at the last minute because you're not getting the price you want. Of course, I don't know that this is what has happened. And Superbass does have a very good reputation. My guess is that they made a mistake when they listed it, not specifying a minimum price they good live with, and didn't notice the mistake until the last minute. But I'm only guessing; I don't know why the listing was pulled.

well bsee feel free to wipe the egg off your face...
the reason it was pulled was that a potential bidder wanted it shipped to france and when the request was declined a scam email appeared willing to broker the deal. steve was not comfortable, notified ebay and pulled the bid until he can block the bidders.
i bet you dont know steve otherwise you wouldnt have said what you said. he is as honest a person i have ever met. my dealer on the direwolf and is one of alembics best dealers and i got his back.

Jeff, I made no value judgement regarding the cancellation, so climb down off your high horse. I have traded a handful of emails with Steve regarding the possibility of his handling my custom deal, the selling of one of my other basses, and some of his other eBay deals.

Also, if you know the eBay ID of a bidder that you want to block, there is an interface for you to block them on-the-fly. I am not sure how eBay would block bidders if you couldn't identify them, though there is the option of creating an auction where individual bidders must be pre-approved before bidding. I suspect there is a misunderstanding in there somewhere.

In any case, it doesn't matter. Cancelling a listing with a day or two left on it is perfectly legitimate by eBay standards. I was just trying to follow up to Dave's announcement of the cancellation so that people wouldn't assume that off eBay means no longer for sale. I still encourage any readers that are interested in this bass to contact Superbass directly, which I wouldn't do if it were my intent to paint them as a dishonest dealer.

If you'd care to discuss this further, why don't you contact me privately and keep the mud-slinging off these boards.

Jeff; thanks very much for the explanation.

Guys; careful with that egg and mud, I wouldn't want any to get on my bass <g>!
