That bass is soooo cool. I really love the historic pieces.

I own one of these monsters too. Mine is a Starfire with twin superfilters installed on board. It is amazing. It will give ANY sound. The one I have does not have the front access panel like this one, but it's electronics are accesed from the rear.

I have to say that Phil Lesh's Alembic moded Starfire has to be one of my favorite sounding basses I have ever heard-I liked it better than his series 2 that he played in later years.
My question is how did they control the feedback- I have an old ES-345 and ES335 and both are feedback MONSTERS in some live situations.I know the series basses are hollowed out-but it just isnt the same to me without the sound holes. They must have put something in there to deaden the vibrations within the body (maybe all those electronics got in the way eh?)
Dela217- would love to see your bass if you have pics?? saw your bass with the caramel p/u's- sweet!
peace

Googe,
On the one that I have there is nothing on the inside. It is still hollow. As far as feedback, It can happen! I just have to be careful when using it. Also, I have to be careful when tweaking those knobs. I could possibly send a signal out to the soundman that could make the entire PA "kangaroo".

I do have some pics, but I am not sure where to put them. Custom basses maybe? If you want I could just send them to you....Michael

i think there should be 2 new folders in the showcase area-
1) alembic modifcation instruments
2) artists guitars/basses-post pix of your fav alembic artists (playing alembics of course)

Michael-I dont think anyone would hate you for posting the Guild/alembic in the custom folder-probably where it needs to be inlieu of a new folder-I dont know about anyone else-but if I cant play it-I love to stare at it! pictures are the next best thing to being there! I wish alembic would post every axe they make!!

Hey Gang, Inside the Guild/Alembic on Ebay they mention " Pluto filters". Does anyone have any info on these? I'd love to know more about these early Alembics.Mica, can you shed any light on the subject? Mike D.

I asked my dad about Phil's basses and the one on eBay now. He said that Phil's bass and a few other Starfires were neck through. The neck did not touch the top, but it did touch the back. The sustain block on Phil's bass has two settings. It was either touching the top of the neck, or raised above it. Since the basses really weren't hollow body, there really wasn't a feedback problem to solve. I don't know if the one on eBay is neck through or not.

Also, we never made a Series II bass for Phil. I think the bass you're referring to also had the Pluto electronics in it (we weren't involved with that company).

My dad thinks the bass on eBay now has our P5 preamp in it, and 2 gain controls on the front and possibly an envelope filter (because of the gain controls on the front).

I agree about the additional folders. I'm doing some work on the Club on Sunday, so I'll add them then.

I posted a picture of my modified Guild Starfire in the folder for instruments modified by Alembic. Sorry about the size of the pic. Right now it is the only picture I have. I will take some better pics of this bass soon. The back of the bass is pretty cool too. They did a continous wood back on the bass, even back then. The back of the Starfires did not originally have a plate, but Alembic did their magic and used the cutout for the plate. If you look closely at the battery cover, it does not have any screws. I just placed it there for the picture. I need to get some screws for this one day....Michael
