It is not uncommon for the serial number to be worn off when they are on the end of the fretboard. I don't know if the owner tried taking a rubbing but it might show more than you can see with the naked eye. I've been looking for a short to medium scale series bass for a long time and for some reason this one just doesn't speak to me. Very distinctive.
