Thanks for all the input regarding acoustic sounding fretless basses offered in another thread. I've played a few and really like the Rob Allen I'm currently borrowing from a friend and the Turner Renaissance. Looks like they go very quickly when up for sale on the used market. I'm still looking for a used, reasonably priced, 4 or 5 string Rob Allen MB-2 or Turner Renaissance bass. My friend has allowed me to use his for practice sessions but doesn't want me to gig with it. Still have time since we won't be playing out for a few months but would like to acquire something soon to familiarize myself with it. I'd appreciate a heads up for anyone who sees one up for sale in their area.

Hey Brian, you are lucky to be able borrow one to see how you like it. I found myself in the same position as you. Finding a used Rob Allen is tough. I finally decided to purchase a Takamine TB-10. Being that I have played an upright in my life it attracted me to it. I had to get it set up after I received but but I'm really digging it.

I was able to purchase a nice fretless walnut Ron Allen from a guy in North Carolina. It wasn't cheap and feels like a toy compared to my Alembic but I love the sound and so do my band mates. Interestingly I've found the transition to an unlined 5-string fretless a whole lot easier than the move from 4 to 6 string fretted bass.
