my mark king arrives tomorrow. mica and dave and i have discussed the horns. so, i'm on the "horns" of a delimma (sp?). i have a stand which should keep the tailpiece horns from contacting the floor of my bassroom, which is carpeted. however, i'm scared to death of jarring them even the slightest bit. remember the man bra episode of seinfeld? "the bro." just on a day to day basis, obviously not in public where children/horses/animals would be scared, is there some unspoken alembic prophilaxsis one uses to protect them? is there some kind of "nasa body contouring/swedish sleep solution" kind of foam or something you can use to protect them? ideas? solutions? advice other than be real careful? | ||

I use a guitar "hook," which is bolted [securely] to the wall, not a floor stand. The hook holds my bass at the nut. It displays my Alembic like a piece of art [which it is] and also holds it securely. Be sure to use the ones with foam covers though, otherwise you'll get some wear where the neck flares unless you're really careful. Congrats! | ||

i have a fender bullet autographed by green day and use a hook to hang that on the wall. i was worried about this stuff you hear about basses being heavier than guitars and stress cracks developing where the neck and headstock meet. not a problem w/alembics due to their solid construction? | ||

I always keep my alembics and other instruments for that matter in their cases until I need to use them. When I get them out to play, they are hung on a guitar hook in between practice sessions. | ||

I use the Ultimate stand (that's the name of the product, not a value judgment). It holds the bass securely at the nut. | ||

I always leave mine in the case until the time comes to play it. My advice is to use the case. This way accidents are less likely to happen. It also helps prevent dust build up. I wouldn't leave a caddy out to the elements, I would put it in the garage. Wouldn't you? | ||

pmoran, I use a "guitar tree" that holds three guitars or basses suspended from the peghead. It holds the bass high enough to prevent the tip from touching the ground.  Peace, James | ||

Like jazzyvee and oggydoggy I keep all my instruments in their cases until I need to use them ( the best protection ) and I only use cases not gigbags ( I refuse to use gigbags). Depending on floor space and how many sets the gig is I 'll use 2 single Onstage stands ( for a 1 set gig ) I really don't like the singles, or a Onstage triple stand ( for 3 or 4 sets ) its ok, better than the singles, but I'm still not pleased with it, I have trouble fitting my Conklin 7 string necks in it cause of their width and my Chapman Stick also ( I have a nice Stick stand) but prefer to bring only 1 stand if possible. However I did find a Warwick 7 instrument stand I really really like, its built like a anvil roadcase, and will safely hold up to 7 instruments of any neck width or body style, the inside is completely lined with felt, sets up in seconds and doesn't have any parts to fall off or lose, its like an UltraCase stand but much less in price. Pmoran, I'm away from home 'til Sunday, so I won't be able to get you the brand name until then. k-f-sheriff, I expect my fiver to be with me 'til I will it to my kids. Unless you're talking about the Lakland fiver. Sold that to a school teacher in Minnesota. Everything else in the picture is still mine. beelee, I picked up that tree at music store in Waterford, Mi. Name of the place escapes me. I'm currently on vacation in Vegas, so a lot escapes me right now. Cost about $50 - 60. It's great to take on gigs. Since I usually only take two basses to a gig, I usually score points with the guitarists who now have a cool and convenient place to hang a spare. Peace, James | ||

Samash.com has a great deal on a Groove Pak six guitar (or bass) suitcase style stand for under $50! The comparable Fender brand stand (also available from Sam Ash) is $249! I bought two of the Groove Pak stands and love them. Surprisingly well made for the money. My wife lets me keep six of my electrics in the living room in the stand. In my pre-Alembic years I tried a variety of stand designs but I never really felt comforable with any of them. By the time I got my first Alembic I had sworn them off. My Alembic can be found in one of two locations; around my neck or in its case. That may be a little over the top but it does give me peace of mind. - Jim | ||

Pmoran, The stand I have is called "Ultra". I've lost track of the manufacturer name, but it's something like "Kaman". I to used to keep all my instruments in their cases but after a long time realised that I was very lazy. If the instruments were in their cases, in order to play them I have to go through the trouble of getting them out and putting them away when I was finished. Currently I am in the process of designing a wall mounted rack that I can use to hang all my instruments out on. They will be supported by the nut as well, and hung up high enough to be out of harms way. | ||

My situation is similar to Michael's. Some time ago I found that if the instruments are in their cases, they are "out of sight, out of mind". So I started leaving them out in their stands and sure enough I was practicing a lot more. When I'm walking from the kitchen to the office I have to walk right past my basses; and frequently I'll stop and pick one up and practice for a while. | ||

Hercules makes a nice triple stand. It's a little more sturdy than the ultra, but I don't know if it's tall enough for you 34" scale guys, but probably. Also it's got the auto-grab feature which is kinda slick. Here are some. | ||
