Hey gang, there's an alembic AXY model pickup with filter and volume on Ebay going pretty cheap right now.The pickup appears to be well worn but since I checked last,it was only going for $46! Mike |

ahh.. so thats what that is! an actual 'AXY'? (thats way cool, i thought it was some kind of really old aftermarket "activator"). I'm the one who eventually bought it (final bid was $122.50 with shipping) - i'm really pleased I will be able to "test-drive" the alembic 'humbuckers' a bit, as im planning on ordering a 5-string next year, but there is no dealer in my area.

Thanks Doc! The problem is, I'm not yet SURE exactly what I would like to order. 'In a perfect world' - I could sit down with a dozen Alembics in person, and let my ears decide. I'm sure the differences are 'fairly subtle', but there must be audible differences between the different woods, as well as "Series" electronics vs the humbucking kind. My dilemma is to somehow figure out (long distance) what will work best for me. All things being equal, the 'series' electronics are said to be "more clear sounding". That's a factor, but hard for me to decide unless I can A/B them against the humbuckers in identically prepared woodworks. And even if I had that opportunity, and could gauge the sonic contribution of the electronics themselves - then i have to factor in the tonal influence of the different wood combinations. And then, weigh all that against the aesthetic issues and come to a decision about what will work best for me. The Alembic website is helpful, and reading through all the posts here is very helpful too! I only wish there was an "alembicsoundclips.com" where I could go and compare different configurations - and zero in on the sounds that "I" like best...

Well, You do have some thinking to do. Is price a factor in your decision? You can email me directly at ALEMBICDOC@AOL.COM. I have been selling, owning, and playing Alembics for most of my life and I can help you decide on tonewoods. If you give me an idea of what you like in tone I can match you up to the correct bass. You can also contact me at my store. 408-377-5864. I am in Monday - Friday 10-6 PST. DOC |

Doc, the plan is to keep saving for a new one eventually....As to price, If you can find me one, I'm not going to be all that picky. In the meantime I'm gong crazy with envy watching all these "righties" grab wonderful Series basses off of Ebay for two to three grand! Wish I could do the same mike |

I was just thinking, Michael, that if I were a lefty and really wanted a series bass without breaking the bank, I might do the following: A) buy right handed series bass on E-bay possibly close to 2 grand (i've seen them go for that) B) send bass to Alembic & ask for new lefty body wings to be fitted to neck, harware & electronics, after all, since most series basses have crown headstocks the neck will always look right no matter which side is up, so all you'd have to do is swap bridge saddles. At least I'd ask Mica what that might cost; the whole thing should still be considerably cheaper than a new one, and you'd still end up with a bass that looks brand new. If you don't ask for premium wood tops it should not be too expensive. Just a thought Valentino |

Valentino, I actually thought of doing that but wrote it off as a potentialy expensive idea and one that Alembic would not be too keen to tackle. I also considered a used small standard body as these are already symetrical. I would just change the nut and bridge and deal with the knobs but I don't think I would enjoy a short scale. On the other hand I think you're right ,It could 'nt hurt to ask. Thanks for the suggestion. Mike |
