Most likely he used these to reverse engineer the electronic components...

That's: Two $3500 basses, one $4500 and one $1500 bass for only $23000 :-)

Yeah, I see it now.
Seams like he sells counterfeit as well as legit stuff.
At first I thought this was a scam in never seeing a collection sold all at once before. Then again?
Hate to see nice basses tarnished.
Peace,

It is surely " The Boogie Man" .Of whom there have been many threads of mention about this eBay seller on this site. As well as stepping on the nice toes of Alembic Inc, this person has made what I consider disparaging remarks on Ebay in the past toward paticipants of our Alembic Club Forum. It is my decision not to do business with this seller as I have mentioned before. I apologize for this redundancy in stating my opinion, which I do with a big smile and without malice :-):-):-):-)!

I'll take a little different path... although I wouldn't personally do business with the Boogieman either, simply because I'm aware (by means of this Board) of his tactics, a vintage Alembic is still a vintage Alembic, and I hope these instruments end up in the hands of someone who appreciates them for what they are rather than a means for copying someone else's ingenuity. Bad ju-ju there, but maybe some good will come of it.

And yeah Wolf, look what he says in the description about time wasters and bloggers. Hey, I resemble that remark! =)

The remarks that this individual made this time are mild in my opinion compared to what was written in the past . A while ago the remarks were aimed at not only us " time wasters and bloggers" but at personnel of Alembic Inc as well . That was a while back.

He seems kinda' sour for sure.

On that note, I should issue an apology if (the first part of) my above post came off snooty or snarky, as I really didn't mean it that way, very much the opposite actually.

You know how sometimes stuffs sounds different when you read it back... what I meant was, I ended up here a couple years ago after a crooked ebay'r sold me a stripped-out bass. I'd dreamed of my own Alembic for 20-some-odd years and was thoroughly crushed.

Then Flip (fc_spoiler) sent me here from another forum, where I met you folks, and Mica and Co. that helped me fix it up like new. The rest is history yet to be written. There could be another happy ending here, was all I meant... mea culpa.

I'll bring this back to Flip's comments with which I wholeheartedly agree. Whatever these basses were used for, the seller is asking about twice the market value.

I hadn't seen that reply from "Boggieman" before. My opinion of him has now dropped even lower than it was before. Sad to see that collection of basses in his clutches. Hope they find their way to a good home!

It's interesting to note that after slamming what we all know are some of the finest instruments in the world in his earlier posting, and in this most recent one indicating that they are like wine vintages, he admits to owning over 30 Alembics over the years. That's a lot of product to purchase if you think what you are buying is of poor or questionable quality.

I would love to have that SII. It's pretty much what I'm looking for: medium scale, nice dark wood, omega cut.

Interesting that there are no pictures of the electronics cavity. Thats something I would need to see if I were buying from someone who sells their own versions of alembic electronics.

Yes, Edwin, nice bass, but the ad he has on eBay for his series electronics copy suggests that the electronics in that bass may have been altered (photo shows back plate of this bass with altered electronics).

I'm not sure what your point is.

And electronics are easily replaced. Since none of the instruments are hacked up, getting an original board would be a simple matter, assuming the alleged replacement didn't function.

Well, presenting as a collection is an easy way to skew pricing, since what he wants is private dialogue to sell his overpriced inventory, which, my guess is, he paid too much for himself. Personally, credibility is everything when it comes to Internet sales and this fellow seems to have little.

I encourage other club members to ignore him, for, as a group, we represent the majority of his prospective marks... I mean potential customers.

I asked Cletus to translate, since English is his second language (he doesn't have a first).

quote:

well, you might be right, however here is my point;
All basses I have are a colectors grade, and since you are watching the Alembic market here is something that you may not be aware of. A new Alembic can not match the quality of the instruments made in the 70s and very early 80s. Why is that ? easy....back in the days they had real luthiers working there, people who new and care...today they have just employees leaving and coming all the time. Most if not all of the new Alembics these days go to lawyers and doctors- fans of Stanley, and what they get is a 22k guitar finished with polyester or achrilic(good for your car) instead of nitro. For the last 20 years ,there must have been 30-35 Alembics gone trough my hands and I have never seen any good one after 1983. Personaly I think Alembics are overpriced piece of crap. I own and play many basses in the 3-4K price level and yes for the TV I will pull out the Alembic, but for the real play Alembic stays in the closed. Now is time to clean the closed.
Cheers

Whatever for that. There have been lots of great post 1983 Alembics. I think they are doing some of their best work right now. I have owned a 70s Alembic and a 2011 Alembic. Both were great and there was a lot to be said in favor of the new one.

But his opinions don't mean that I can't lust after one he's selling. Clearly it deserves to be played by someone with a different worldview.

If the electronics are not Alembic and need replacing that would make the prices he is asking even more outrageous than if they were all original.

I don't believe there is any evidence that the electronics are anything but Alembic. Rather, the allegation seems to be that Mr. Boogeyman used these to reverse engineer and copy the Alembic electronics. Under the circumstances, it may be a reasonable assumption.

I have several Alembics from both the early days and more recently built instruments, and I strongly disagree with Mr. Boogeyman's comparison of Alembics with wine and his claim that the early ones were far superior. If anything, the newer ones are a little more refined and, of course, we all know that the newer Series instruments are more resistent to RF interference.

The truth shall prevail !
I concur with Bill , Series II circa 1997 has proven to be less susceptible to RFI noise in a more diverse variety of scenarios then a Series I circa 1973 . And , That's the way it is !

That is my old Series 2 Omega he has for sale. I sold it to him a few years ago. It was a nice super clean bass. I asked him if I could buy it back, but he wants way more than what I sold it to him for. I remember all too well what I sold it for, and when I inquired about buying it back, he started throwing out huge numbers, and telling me to check the Paypal account for the selling price. Well, I just told him I must be getting forgetful, but then he checked the sale price and realized I was right, and had sold the bass for what I remembered selling it for.

Yep it was a great bass. It had an extra pair of pickups which were custom wound for Stanley Clarke. I drove to the Bay area to buy it from a nice fellow. I paid $6K for it from him. I ended up selling it to the current owner for $5.5K, so he got a nice bass and I took a loss on it. I would buy it back for what I sold it for, but not $7.8K like the owner expects to get.
