You undoubtedly would have wound up with a Hondo II supplied under government contract by Haliburton for the "reasonable" sum of only $75,000 charged to the taxpayers! Bill, KBR (a subsidiary of Halliburton) pretty much runs most of the logistics support in certain areas (e.g., food, laundry, etc.) and they do a fairly decent job all considered. I read something the other day where KBR is losing their shirt over since the contract was bid way low - don't know if that's true, but they're here and provide most of what we need fairly efficiently. Now, the food they provide .... well, let's just say it's glorified cafeteria food. Better than MREs to be sure, but like anything else one does over and over, it gets old very quickly. Suffice to say I eat a lot of sandwiches. Government basses - actually, when the government does things like that they do pretty well. I've played Fenders at music centers on several posts. Not an Alembic, but better than that Hondo II! Now, how much they paid for it ... another matter entirely! Kevin, Will try to get some good pix when I get the bass here. All, I'm quite safe all things considered, but I truly appreciate the support and concern. No place is completely safe, but as things go I don't think I'll have any problems getting home in one piece if things continue as they are. One never knows, but the prospects are promising. Anyway, I'm truly looking forward to this one (and my Entwistle Series II custom I have on the way - my present to me for this tour). I've been going nuts without anything to play here in the hours I am not working. Can't wait to get it. Best regards, Alan | ||

Such as: The Essence of Baghdad The Bass that Hussein Built The Mother of All Basses The JDAM (Joint Direct Alembic Munition) Baghdad Bob's Bass ("I can tell you there are no Alembics in Baghdad!") The Essence arrived today, and it's beautiful. It has some player wear, scratches, etc., but nothing major. It plays wonderfully, though I think I'm going to have to tweak the action, truss rod adjustments, etc. Not to worry, though - I do this with all my instruments from time to time. Still waiting on some Flitz to arrive from the states as well as some Lemon Oil, fingerboard cleaner, etc. so I can clean her up nicely. Overall she is yet another example of fine Alembic craftsmanship. I'll get pictures of me with it in front of the Presidential Palace here when I get a chance. It is now the first Alembic in Iraq to my knowledge. One more thing. I bought this through Good Guys Bass and Guitar Traders via Ebay (for those interested, their website is www.goodguysguitars.com). All I can say about these guys is that they really, really took care of me. Not only did the bass arrive safe and sound (no mean feat given that the bass had to travel about 10,000 miles via the U.S. Postal service), "Kebo" at Good Guys all sent me 6 sets of bass strings, six sets of guitar strings for guitar players here, three bottles of polish, a cable, a Dean Markley Micro amp, three T-Shirts, and an electronic tuner. He didn't have to do this, but he did. Being where I am at present, I can state that we here truly appreciate everything our countrymen do to support us, and this is no exception. Additionally, I've had several email conversations with Kebo, and they've been very informative and pleasant. They've got other Alembics on their website (a Series 1 and a beautiful blue Elan), so you might want to check them out (they've also go some other really neat basses, to include a bunch of vintage Fenders and Gibsons for those interested). In any event, I give Good Guys a ringing endorsement, and they have not only my deepest gratitude and sincere thanks, but highest recommendation as well. In today's day and age and given the nature of Ebay at times, it's nice to know that there are "Good Guys" out there after all. Alan (Message edited by ajdover on January 22, 2006) | ||

The USAF does business here, 60-90 minutes from my house. Our nat'l airport is 45 minutes from me. If you get the opportunity, our door's open! Oh, and it would be REALLY cool to get a pic of you (in uniform) playing your *Spyder* at the palace! You could title it The Spyder Hole. ;-) | ||
