i sold this bass to flaxattack. the pic was taken in my livingroom. i can verify that it is an absolutely beautiful bass in perfect working order, electronically and otherwise. the beauty of the top has to be seen to be believed. it's a great looking, playing and sounding bass.

Jeff,

I completely understand that it's a shame to have any Alembic riding the bench. That's why I put my Orion up for sale. But, you know, there may be times and places that you'd like an Alembic in your hands but you wouldn't feel comfortable about it being the DW (or the upcoming Tribute). There are plenty of places my Little Bear will never go!

Just some food for thought.

Regards,

Jonathan

i have owned several persuaders, possibly 3 in number, but this one was absolutely the most beautiful bass i've owned other than my coco bolo mark king. in fact, there was a debate, which flax settled once and for all, about whether it was coco or vermillion. val said it was vermillion as well, but the owner i bought it from had kept it in pristine condition, and it has acquired a patina that is truly remarkable. the second i saw flax was selling it, i had pangs of remorse for selling it. however, i love my mark king coco. this bass has that sound. i can't explain how it does, but i think dave and others chimed in about how vintage top woods, and i believe this one was made from some stock that was considerably older than they thought, can make a bass take on a personality that is remarkable. this is that bass. i played it A/B with my MK, back and forth, and i truly could not tell the difference when i set the MK electronics flat and then adjusted them to a "fair fight." other than my vector persuader which jim now owns up in colorado, i miss this bass the most. it's a true treasure.

btw, this is the bass i coined a phrase for. i would like to resurrect that phrase. an ebay "lookie" kept arguing w/me about whether or not it was vermillion. i termed him an "alembitch." those are people who want to debate every insignificant detail about an alembic they know nothing about.

you will love this bass when you get it. guaranteed. i think, for persuaders and given their relative value as compared to the "big boys", you are going to treasure this bass. it is so beautiful that when you see it, and again given it's value vs. a series bass, you will think it can't sound as beautiful as it looks. wrong! there is something magical about this bass. i guarantee the wood gives it something extra. something indefinable. an "alembaura."

Thanks for reassuring me...I've been having "withdrawal" since I sold my Custom Rouge here last summer. 5-string and 36" neck was too much bass for my short frame. I'm looking forward to playing an Alembic again!

i believe, strongly, this is one of those basses that should be kept in the club. it's a remarkable persuader. i know there are those who believe that the "E's" are the thing, and this is pretty standard when it comes to the "E's"; however, the wood is the thing w/this bass and it imparts a signature sound to this bass.

REAL hard to go wrong with an Activator P/J setup on what appears to be a very special bass. The wonders of wood always make it real hard for me to consider graphite instruments, just nothing like owning a special piece of creation.

Congrats on your acquisitions. The Persuader is definitely a great playing and looking bass. I am a little disappointed that the tuners are silver Gotoh's and not the original gold Alembic tuners. (That can be remedied at a later time).

Wayne; I don't understand your statement. If you are asking if Gotohs were original on 1986 Alembics, they were.

i'm receiving strange questions from a person claiming to be the buyer of this persuader. he's asking me why i changed out the tuners from alembic tuners to gotoh's, which i think is a question dave answered. i've been answering his questions all evening............then, i decided to check here to see what the hell was going on. he asked me what strings were supposed to be on the bass. i told him i couldn't remember but i thought they might be ken smiths. then, i went back here and found out flax had put TI's on the bass. strangely, w/o realizing this was the same bass i'd sold flax, i suggested he put TI's on it. when he told me he'd bought the bass from "jeff" and that he'd bought my persuader VECTOR, i thought he was talking about jeff pollicita who bought my persuader vector. so, something strange is going on here, because this guy "wayne" bought the persuader VERMILLION, not the VECTOR, i sold. so, if he already knew the answer dave provided for the tuners, and he already knew jeff "flax" put TI's on the bass, what the f... is he asking me this crap for from my email address listed on my profile? is this a joke? am i being stalked? what is this crap?

i forgot something. when he said he'd bought my persuader VECTOR from "jeff", who i thought to be jeff pollicita in longwood, colorado, and who i knew would NEVER sell that bass, he sent a pic of a persuader KOA! i saved the pic if anyone wants to see. so, i responded that i'd never sold a bass that looked like that and was he talking about the VECTOR which didn't look anything like that. it had a tiger maple top.............then, i began receiving, as has this site, weird questions about strings and tuners which dave and flax already answered. i just don't understand what this wayne character is pulling here.

Gotoh Alembic tuners come in Gold, Chrome and Black. Some, but not all, have an A in Alembic script on the back. I can't recall but I believe the current tuners are the same as the ones used in '86. You should give Val a call at Alembic.

Hi Patrick; I don't really know but it might just be a simple case of someone asking for help with some questions they have about their bass. Email and internet posts are an imperfect means of communication. As you said, sometimes it can be difficult to understand what someone else is saying.

Dave,
You're absolutely right...I was just asking for help and clarifying what was standard on 86 Persuaders. I thought the best way was to ask those who actually owned the bass. I apologize if my questions were misinterpreted. I'm not trying to "pull anything" or "stalk" anyone. I truly enjoy playing this bass and was simply asking about the history of the bass (original parts etc). Sorry for misunderstandings, I'm relatively new to Alembics.

still doesn't explain why "wayne" sent a pic of a koa persuader w/p-j pups, saying it was my old bass i sold flax. as we can all plainly see, the bass at the top of this thread is a vermillion top, pic taken in my livingroom...........looks nothing like the persuader "wayne" sent me by email. not even close. koa persuader didn't even have the custom knobs i put on mine when i sold it to flax and the tuners were never gold. in addition, i received an email from "wayne" insisting the koa top persuader was the pic from this site relating to this bass.........it's not!

If I sent the wrong pic...I apologize. It seems as though my inquiries are being blown out of proportion. I was simply asking about the history (parts etc) about bass I bought.

Patrick,

It seems there was some confusion here, and if I were to speculate I would suggest an unfortunate coincidence of new-owner enthusiasm, and prior-owner paranoia :-), as well as the vagaries of modern communication as Dave suggested.

No reason to make a federal case out of it, you now have two public apologies, whether warranted or not. Time to let go and move on, life is too short to dissect the past.

No criticism or offense intended, this discussion just doesn't seem constructive or otherwise useful. Hope you agree.

I'm sure folks wish we would keep better track of things like when the "A" mark started showing up on the back, but it's just one of those countless decisions we make every day.

I vaguely remember drawing an enormous A for the artwork on the tuners when we were still on Foley Street, but it had to be after 1987, because that's when I started working here. In 1986, it's almost certain the tuners were chrome standard issue Gotohs, which except for the decoration are the same as the Alembic-Gotohs.

Another note about tuners We received many compliaints that the tuners didn't match the brass hardware. Sometime after 1987 (probably before 1992 or so) we started putting gold tuners on as standard. We loved the chrome finish for it's practicality - it looks new for a really long time, unlike the gold, which can wear pretty quickly depending on the person.

Hope this can help clear up questions about tuners on Alembics. If there are others, please ask myself or Valentino, we're happy to assist.
