Actually I figure the 12 string reserve is too high. I traded emails with the seller before. They want top dollar and maybe then some - and it hasn't had the electronic upgrade, so add another $1500! The 6 string, on the other hand, I'm keeping a close eye on. It looks like there's no power supply and I doubt its had the upgrade either. Think I'll go email the seller. I'm playing that one much closer to the vest. LOL

Bill, I personally thought that $4900 (see the Bunny Bass link) wasn't too high an asking price for a 12-string Series II. If I were a guitar player, or if there was a money tree growing in my backyard, I would be VERY tempted at that price. Amazing instrument...

Wilfred:

The 12 string has been on consignment at Bunny Bass for a while. The seller apparently lowered the price since I last checked,IIRC. Even at $4900, add the upgrade and it's $6,400. I think it's a beautiful instrument and I'd grab it in a minute if I won the lottery, but on the open market I don't think it gets anything close to $4900. I guess we will watch and see.

I just won the auction for the Series 1 six string guitar. Yee Ha!!!! (Thanks Mike). I've been lusting for one of the old series guitars for about 30 years since I played in a short-lived band called "Cripple Finger" with a guy named Keith who had one. Before the beer bottles start pounding on the tables in the taverns of Belgium, I promise I'll post pics upon receipt.

Congrats Bill!

Let us know what you think of it and post plenty of pix.

$2400 doesn't seem too bad if the thing is in nice shape. That;s half of what they want for the 12-string! Does it need the electronic upgrade?

Cheers,

Well, it IS a 6-string after all ...

Congrats to Bill - nice score (if one may use such a term in relation to such a fine specimen of luthiery)!

Yeah...I figured I'd get the "half as many strings" gag!

BTW, Did the 12-string sell or was reserve not met? My Dutch/Flemish language skills are close to non-existent.

Congrats on that beauty! They don't come along often enough in that kind of shape. Nice piece of Alembic history.

There's going to be a hole in that tabletop soon if you're not careful. And, all the beer will have spilled by now.

Thanks guys. Of course now I have to go to the post office, buy an EXPENSIVE money order, send it to L.A. (certified, return receipt, of course) and hold my breath. The seller has loads of positive feedback and has been very responsive through email, but this part is still downright scary. According to the seller, the guitar had the electronic mod at Alembic in 2002 and will come with paperwork to that effect. I'll be looking for a power supply for it (anybody got an extra one lying around?). The seller claimed it runs on batteries and they last for a year. That's contrary to what I've heard, but we'll see. It doesn't have LEDs (can you say "hotdotz"?) so maybe the battery lasts longer without 'em. An old Series 1 and my custom Further getting ever closer to completion. 2006 looks good!

Bill; call the guy and see if he'll meet you half way. How far is it; six hours? For that guitar I would drive the whole way. It would be a long day of driving, but worth it.

And it's had the upgrade!!

The listing says he'll take a cashiers check, which is probably free at your bank.

I'm with Dave on the driving idea. It would be a shame for that beautiful instrument to suffer some horrible fate at the hands of the delivery service du jour.

I'd do it if I could, but I'm off tomorrow morning for NYC until Thurs night for family stuff (and a Wed. night jam with Jeff Flaxman) and that's about all the time I can take off this month. Knock on wood, I've never had a problem with a shipped guitar. The seller has good feedback on packing and shipping. He even requested that I send him an address label already filled out, so I know the address will be correct. Of course I'll breath easier once it arrives safe & sound.

Bill,

Did the guitar arrive today? I'm living vicariously through you right now, brother. I really want a 70's Series I, but only in as good a condition as yours looks. I'm happy to have my Alembic collection grow with future models, but it'd be nice to have a prime example of their past as well.

Jealous,

IT'S HERE!!!!!!!! Oh, the joys of self-employment. My wife called this morning to tell me it had arrived. I had one client coming in for an appointment and then straight home. Opened the box, spilled styro peanuts all over the place, and VOILA! Even nicer than I could have possibly dreamed! This was my holy grail of guitars for the last 30+ years! The only object I've ever lusted after longer is a Jaguar E-Type (which I'll get one of these days). I'll have pics up in Showcase in a few minutes. WOW!!!!!! Now I can't wait for rehearsal on Thursday night. And, of course, this calls for a visit back home to Alembic in the very near future.
