..preferably a '70's model. I don't plan on buying one right away, but I just thought I'd test the waters and see if anyone had anything. Can someone give me a price quote, of about how much one of these would cost? And help would be appriceated. Thanks,

Jimmy

Prices on a '70's model can vary fairly widely. One significant factor is whether the bass has had the electronics upgrade; most have not. Others are whether the power supply, cable, and case are included. And of course the condition of the bass is a factor. And if the bass has any non-Alembic modifications, it can significantly lower the value. Also, there is the market itself; sometimes there are more buyers than sellers, and sometimes more sellers than buyers. And it's been my observation that prices for these basses tend to increase over time. Off the top of my head, my guess is that currently a '70's model Series I with power supply, cable, and case but without the upgrade and in good condition may go for around $2,800. But that's just a guess and I could be way off in either direction.

That seems good. That's actually signifigantly less than I expected, but like you said, it all depends on this and that. As for condition, I'm not expecting something mint, you know? A bass with a few dings and scratches gives it character, so condition wouldn't really be an issue, unless it's something that going to cost big bucks to fix (as in more than i paid for the bass itself). Anyhow, thanks Dave!

Of course, Dave's number is for a private sale. If you find one at a dealaer, it will most likely be priced in the $3500-4500 range. I wouldn't expect to get more than a player's instrument for under $3000. That would be an instrument with no cracks, but probably a bunch of little dings and scratches. It will play and sound great, but don't expect any exciting woods.

The big bucks come with the cable/power supply ($500ish if you don't make your own) and the electronics upgrade ($1000-1500) if you find it necessary.

Don't get me wrong, under $3K is possible, I just wouldn't count on it happening every week.

Good luck!

Bob is right; my number is a private sale number. I wasn't considering dealer sales.

Right. If I end up buying one, it'll most likely be from here or ebay.

Just to note, I have an '83 spoiler that might be up for trade if anyone would be interested in it (for the series I). It's in fair shape - plays fine, but there is a hole in the front of the body. Looks like someone removed something and it left a square hole (about 3/4" x 3/4") below the knobs.

Hey lysosome, we spoke before about my 76 S-1, s/n 399 heartwood mid scale bass. There are photos several places on this site. davehouck has been working with me adjusting dollar value. I believe I would part with it only to a club member. I need to know where it lives and you certainly show a need for such a piece. Lets talk.
