Very interesting instrument. The neck looks to either be a thin neckthru with a cap on the back or maybe a deeply set neck. Are you bidding on it, Keavin?

I agree, Bill, I just can't tell about the neck. It clearly looks like it started life with AXYs as well. The abalone around the headstock is very pretty. If you could pick that up cheap, you could probably drop in a set of Anniversary electronics (except for the stereo/mono switch) and have one heck of an instrument.

The only issue I would see is that it looks like a long scale with a pretty small body and no upper horn at all. I suspect that it will balance flat if not a little bit neck down. If you buy this baby, I would recommend one of Allison's straps to hold it up.

I saw that one too. Bob, I agree. I think that bass has plenty of neck dive. I am not sure about the AXY's though, I think that bass would pre date that setup. Becvar used to make similar instruments and used Alembic shaped pickups with EMG electronics. One of these perhaps? Crazy logo too!

I was just going on the screw hole positions, but I could easily be wrong. It certainly wasn't born with the pickups that are in it now.

Bob - It looks like AXY's would drop right in! That would be the way to go. Signature electronics, pilgrim hats and a chicken head. That would look MUCH better than what is in there now!

Keavin, I know what you mean. Right now my funds are going in a non musical direction too. I am still trying to build my house back after Katrina. I like it too.

I'm watching this one....

I've been keeping my eye out for a used Series I. This isn't one, but if it can be had for a "reasonable" price, I might just take a flying leap at it. A set of AXY's list for $900 on the price list. I'm fairly handy, but could any idiot (insert my name here) do the install? Any expert opinions?

Dropping in the AXY's wouldn't give me Series I capabilities, but it would be a very nice intro to Alembic and I'd get some hippy sandwich to boot....

Thanks for the heads up Keavin- Glad/sorry to hear you aren't bidding- I'm not interested in driving up a price for another buyer from the forum.

Michael- We're on opposite ends of the spectrum at this point, because I'm in the middle of a home sale and looking to finally get my hands on an Alembic with some of the sale proceeds. I followed your saga here on the board. I hope life is returning to normal for you~

T,
The electronics are modular and the connections snap together. Cool, huh?

I am watching this one too. I am surprised that no one bid to find out what the reserve is. It is still sitting at $305.00. Hopefully the reserve is low enough so I will still be in the game.

Well, I gave it a poke to see if $501 would meet the reserve, but no such luck. I can't really afford more than that, so good luck Michael!

I'm reaching the "how much higher do I go" range as well. I can't make up my mind how much it's worth....it's not an Alembic, yet it is. It's probably not going to hold the resale value of an older Series I, but by the time you plunk down $900 for a set of AXY's, the price will be nearly halfway to a decent older Series I, yet without Series I capabilities.

Have fun and good luck Michael. I hope you get this one. I think I'll be better served to save my $'s and try to get an older Series I

An older Series I is a great bass. Nothing beats the sound of Series electronics. If you put activators in this bass, it will be nice but not the same sound as Series stuff.

Michael,
That's kind of what I figured. If I already had an Alembic I'd probably be a bit more adventurous with bidding on this one, but I've got a limited amount of cash avaliable for gear purchases.

I reckon that if I'm gonna drop some cash on an Alembic, I might as well go for a Series. ~

This bass would at least show that Alembic did make a singlecut for someone...with big fat pickups! This is the bassplayer from New Riders of the Purple Sage...

Yes. That was David Torbert. I would LOVE to find that bass. Notice that the pickup selector is not on the lower horn, but in the same place as the bass on Ebay.

If it had the origninal electronics....maybe. I had a figure in mind that I was going to bid at the last minute, but it wasn't even close to that. I guess I won't waste my time. To me, it is not worth that kind of money. There are basses out there that I would pay dearly for, but that's not it.

So what did the seller say about the rest of the info? Scale, dimensions and so on.

Ignorant question...

Could those be AXY pickups without the epoxy casting? They look pretty raw as they are, like nothing I've ever seen before, and vastly different from anything else available at the time.

Michael, all - here are the dimensions etc...
scale (bridge to nut?) 37"
total length 45"
bout to bout 13"
weight 13lbs
How accurate the #'s are is ?able. After hearing
the reserve I lost all interest.

Just a guess, but I think the scale measure may be from the tailpiece. And it suggests that the reserve was set with by-the-inch pricing.
