I owned this 1982 series 11 four string Alembic bass since 1984 and hardly played it. I am reluctantly selling it on eBay to raise money for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka who are still in refugee camps.
Check eBy for photos and other info on this collectors bass.

Grace was not the only one in Starship. My earlier post was wrong. I did a little research and Jacks bio says he was not in Starship but Hot Tuna at the time. Then whats up with this photo.

no olie - you have your bands mixed up.

Jefferson Starship became "Starship" after Nuclear Furniture when Kantner left, after a legal battle.

The band "Starship" still performs under the "leadership" of Mickey Thomas. Grace was in that band for awhile, then left. This was the band that gave us (or dumped on us) " We Built this City" , Nothin's gonna stop us Now", etc. Jack was never in Starship.

In the early 90s Kantner formed " Paul Kantner's Wooden Ships" : among these shows,he did a few shows that were just him & Jack. This group metamorphosed into "Jefferson Starship: The Next Generation" (not " Starship", which is now a totally different group with NO Airplane members), the first incarnation of which is the group you have a pic of above. Jack stayed in this group until about 1999, when a few shows were billed (perhaps mistakenly)as "Jefferson Airplane" - Jack withdrew while they all sued each other & has never returned (actually JA Corp. sued Kantner, which was interesting, since he was part of JA Corp, hence was suing himself! :-).
Jefferson Starship did pared down shows as "Acoustic Shuttlecraft" and "Acoustic Explorer", which had no drums, lead guitar or Marty Balin - just keyboards, rhythmn guitar and Kantner & the current female singer (either Darby Gould or Diana Mangano). These shows feature some of the most astonishing bass playing of all time - Casady carries the band - and is essentially simultaneously the bottom end and the lead instrument.

Olie-
Now you're editing your posts when I'm still in the middle of composing my response/dissertation ! :-)

Jack was in Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship TNG simultaneously. (Note - he was never in the original Jefferson Starship, which ran 1974 - 84 or so - Dragon Fly to Nuclear Furniture). he was on the kantner solo albums, 69 - 73, which included one called " Jefferson Starship Blows Against the Empire", which is not a Jefferson Starship album.

Confused yet? :-)

Yea, I caught myself after I thought about it. I did a litlle reading and realized I spoke tooooo soon. You are definetly more informed than I on Starship. But ya' gotta' admit, the post about Casady, Starship and the Series "3" was funny!
Hey folks I'm here all weeeeek!

I like to think of myself as more informed about Airplane/Tuna. The Starship stuff is all ancillary. Not a big fan of most of it.

The Series 3 comment was supposed to be funny? I just placed my order with Mica!

hey, frank, i'd recommend against ordering the "challenger" version of the series III unless they've solved the "o-ring" problem w/the pots. exploding on stage is always a bad scene as we learned from the drummers for spinal tap.

I'm sitting here looking at my copy of "Blows Against the Empire" (a wonderful album, by the way if you aren't familiar with it). The album is attributed to "Paul Kantner Jefferson Starship" and yes, Jack played on it. There have been various incarnations through the years. I saw them in 1995 at the Maritime Hall in S.F. billed as "Jefferson Cybership". As a result of the breakup/lawsuit, Paul got "Jefferson" and Thomas got "Starship".

As for the above-referenced Series III, I hear it has the fastest neck ever made! I suspect, however, there will be quite the wait as it's going to be in rub out for the next 2 years and then if you want inlays ... oy vey!!!! And of course it comes with an extra long 5-pin cable that costs a lot more!

Bill, tgo
