Guys please save my marriage and someone here tell me they want this bass so I won't bid on it.
It looks great and the seller seem to be OK. Not much feedback but responds to emails.

I belive this is the guy selling it?

I'm going to watch the bidding but I really don't need to spend any more money on basses right now. I'll just be a spectator on this one.

I just bumped 'er a few licks. Anybody got a guess on what the reserve might be with the F-2B? How close to $3,000 (one side or the other) will the reserve be, ya reckon?

OK not that I'm watching closely or anything, but it's $50 over the $3.000 mark and the reserve still not reached.....still several days to go so this should prove quite interesting!

By the way, what is the value and/or current market rate for a pre-owned F-2B?

I'd say an F-2B is in the $450-500 range. They went for $400 when list price for a new one was $750. Now that it has gone up over $1K, the used market should be on the upswing for recent models.

Unless there's something special about this bass or the condition, it seems like it may be pushing outside of the reasonable price range. I would have expected a reserve at or below $3500 with a $4000 bid winning it easily. Early bidding always results in a higher final pricetag on eBay, and it appears that there's a smart seller who wants to get every possible penny out of the deal.

My name is SENNY, and yes, i was the guy that was selling the 1981 Alembic Series One LSB on Ebay..The mint condition bass, and vintage F2-B preamp did not meet my reserve, in fact, hit $ 4,050 and did not rise from that in an Ebay auction that was seen all over the world , from NYC to Japan to Australia..That in itself is truly sad..
When i was 18 years old back in 1980, an Alembic series one was only a dream.. in fact, i had to dig through the cushions of the couch, rummage through laundry and borrow from Mom just to dig up the three dollars for the catalog..A new Fender was about 400 dollars back then, an Alembic about 2000.I used to lust after the Series One that Manny's music had in their window on 48th street.
The first record i ever bought was Blues For Allah, my introduction to Phil Lesh, Alembic and the Dead.. Later that year, i read in GP magazing that Lesh used Alembic bassses, Pyramid strings, and Hard Trucker cabs.
My Alembic has so much sentimemtal value attached to it.. it is priceless to me..Here is how i acquired it..
My Uncle Frank(RIP) dared me to sing a really horrible Robert Goulet Christmas song in front of my entire extended family at holiday dinner back in 1982... which i did, because he said he'd buy me the Alembic if i did...what i rendition i performed! Robert Goulet would be proud..
When he was dying of Cancer in 1987, i'd bring my Alembic to his hospital room and play for him...the latest Stanley Clarke licks that i was learning at the time...
What i am trying to say here is that for me, Alembic is far more than a bass... it is a name synonymous with a bunch of like minded people that labored to improve the state of the art in so many different areas i can't even go into it here..and they sure did...I use my Alembic as a conduit to a time and place that i wish i was from, but feel fortunate that i at least hip to..the days of Casady's Alemb-cized Starfire..the days when Alembic was at the forefront of musical innovation..If you are a 21 year old kid into hip hop, you could never have as much passion about this stuff as i do..
Every time i pick up my Alembic, i feed off of the history.. and that helps my playing far more than sitting in a room with a metronome for 10 hours ever did!
I regret putting my Alembic on Ebay.. and i wiped the sweat off my brow when my reserve was not met... because i didn't want to give it up..it was a dangerous experiment that i devised to get a barometer on what the world thinks about the Alembic legacy, and i am saddened as a result.Only a lot of money, which would have been used for my Niece's college education, could have justified the sale..Prior to this,i viewed my Alembic as an investment as well as an instrument, and while 4 k is certainly more than my uncle paid for it.. it hasn't appreciated invalue as it should, partly becuase of people right here on this board putting a damper on the lure and appeal of owning an Alembic..
in fact, after the auction, i went out and bought the remastered Blues For Allah, apologized to my Alembic, saying that it will never happen again.. i hope i am forgiven.
Finally,,, this is the Alembic Club. The few people here that frown every time someone expects a lot in return for selling their Alembic bass should rethink things..You are hurting the Alembic name... bottom line..Every time you burn a cd, ask to be on the guest list, or stop attending live music shows you are sealing the fate on music today, which seems to be doomed..Whatever model of Alembic you own, give the Alembic name the love and respect it deserves...

First of all, welcome to the Club! (this is the edit, I kinda forgot to welcome you, sorry)

Alembic is a part of our lives, I don't think anyone would disagree on that. I haven't seen any hate or disrespect against Alembic anywhere on the club. I think you can ask any price you want, but if your reserve isn't reached it doesn't directly mean that it hasn't been appreciated in value as it should. I think you just found out what the vallue of your beautiful instrument is today. Good for you that you're keeping it. I once let go of a '83 Spoiler, got a fair deal but regret it till this day and I'm looking to get it back.
I think I speak for everyone when I say (bold statement since I'm relative new here, so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong) WE ALL LOVE ALEMBIC!
F.C.
A proud Alembic owner.

Someday down the road, i would love to have Alembic build me a semi acoustic bass patterned
after Casady's Starfire-with Alembic electronics..Next on my list would be a Series One 12 string bass...when i say 12 string bass, i mean like an 8 string, meaning a bass string fundamental and two guitar strings tuned an octave above in unison. I have recently teamed up
with a NJ builder to build a line of 12 string basses that i co designed...however, i would love to see how Alembic would approach it!

Tony, This is just my opinion, but I think if the reserve had been lower and met at below $4,000 the bidding might have jumped to over the $4,050 point it reached. I for one was very interested in the bass but got cold feet I might get caught up in the emotion of a bidding war with no reserve in view, so I dropped out to see if I could climb back in once the reserve was reached.
...on the Topics For Sale or Trade portion of this forum, Olie, David W. and myself have been talking about how badly we have felt (or could feel) about selling other instruments that do not have the sentimental value that your Alembic has for you, Tony. I bought my Mark King 5 from a nice gentleman in New England who wanted to do something special for his four-year-old daughter. I think of him and her just about every time I play the bass.

Senny-

Those of us who comment on prices are doing so because we pay a lot of attention to the market. What I wrote was based upon the history of similar eBay sales, not any wish to impact prices. Heck, as an owner of multiple Alembics, I am happy to see values appreciating. Two years ago, you would have been lucky to see the bidding go much past $3000 on your auction. Older Series I instruments were regularly changing hands for $2500 or so. It's not because people here don't love them, it's because that was the going rate.

You obviously have a very personal attachment to your instrument that makes it more valuable to you. Unfortunately, I doubt any of the potential buyers will see your instrument as more valuable because of its history. I have an instrument like that as well. It's not an Alembic, but it is a bass that I am unlikely to ever sell.

Hi Senny,
I too am glad you're keeping you series I. I believe that most of the folks on this site truely value their instruments. You'll find many have multiple Alembics (I have three). The Ebay pricing phemonenom is a mixed blessing for many younger players who can't afford new instrument pricing (heck I still can't get a series myself), and has been discussed several times before. Several of us have been astounded when seeing old Gibson and Fender prices "on the 'bay", yet Alembics don't achieve as much recognition as they deserve.
I'm from about the same timeframe as you and connect with that same past.
With bass lust in my heart,
Mike

We all have to stick together and perserve the traditions that we believe it..We are living in a time where people go to Sunday Mass in sweat pants... don't know how to tie a necktie...etc..
I am glad i still have my Alembic... when i am ready to let it go, maybe if i am lucky enough to reach the age of 65, i am thinking about giving it to a deserving, worthy, up and coming young bassist that will carry the old school banner into the future, someone that will keep up the fight...nice talking with you guys... you are all very articulate, cool people..

Senny,

You express the opinion of a seller very well, but not that of a buyer. I note that you were given your first Alembic. Most of us had to buy ours with what little we could save up over the years.

Many of us on the list are not independently wealthy--and that's what it takes to get a nice Alembic today. Many of us, myself included, play as volunteers in church worship bands, small jazz groups and other, small venues that pay poorly [or not at all]. Our love of basses, music and Alembic must be balanced with mortgages, kid's college education and the high price of autos and gas--since it comes out of our pocket after those expenses.

Alembic has maintained the highest standards of craftsmanship, but new custom basses are sold at premium prices. On the used market, Alembics must compete with the likes of Ken Smith, Fodera and others. It's no longer the only name in premium basses. Since one can't generally buy a used bass that is customized to one's personal choice, the price sinks to that of other, similar instruments.

Go to the Alembic website a price a new custom bass for yourself, then ask yourself if you'd be willing to pay it. Or ask yourself what you'd be willing to pay for another Alembic, used. I'll bet you come back with a more balanced attitude.

My 1981 Alembic was a gift, but the 34 other basses that i own were all purchased by me.. bar gigs,.... sessions, etc.
I spent 10 hours a day practicing from 1978 to 1984-and all my income from 1980 to present was done with bass in hand..
You make great points...all valid...but to answer you questions would i pay today's prices for a current Alembic? yes i would, but right at this moment i don't have the need for another.. I play all the same type of gigs that you do, as well as many more lucrative ones.I make a living playing music.. that means sometimes selling your soul to pay the bills...and i have all the same bills that you do,,, a mortgage, a child college to save for, gas ,yada, yada, yada, and the last time i checked my last name wasn't Gates! :-)

Senny

Nobody who writes about their ALEMBIC in this way was in any way ready to sell it, especially in light of having THIRTY-FOUR (!) stablemates.

PRICES are relative. It seems just as inexplicable that used Alembics trade for fractions of their purchase price as vintage Fenders or Gibsons for many multiples of their original price . . . it's just the vagaries and whimsy of the market. But they are hardly alone: In the acoustic market, you can buy used Collings, Santa Cruz, etc., for less than Martin or Gibsons, even Taylors.

But VALUE is just as subjective, but a lot more personal. My BigRedBass would certainly sell at some price I'd invariably think was too low, because it's VALUE to ME is priceless. These things are hard to put a $$$ value on.

I never complain about the new prices, as ALEMBIC's business is none of my business. If I could afford 10 grand for a new Series, it would not be bought to trade later. And I never complain about the used prices, as I CAN think about 3 or 4 grand for a used ALEMBIC.

But as my heart's involved, it really DOESN'T have to make sense!

Hi Tony, welcome to the board!

If I may add a few comments to those above.

First, my observations agree with Bob's (bsee), who is one of the most astute obersvers of used Alembic market prices in our forum. As he stated, two years ago the average market price for a pre-1990 used S1 was less than $3,000. Indeed $3,000 was the upper limit. Since that time, prices have indeed tended to move up.

Second, many of the members of this forum watch used Alembic prices on Ebay and elsewhere daily and many have done so for quite some time. We have watched the ebb and flow of the market; and we as a group tend to have a bit of a feel for where the market might be at any given point in time.

Third, over the last couple years, the average market price for a used F-2B went from a fairly steady $400, to an average of $550, and then back down to an average of $450. A very wide fluctuation. Indeed, the market fluctuates significantly week to week as the number of buyers and sellers fluctuates week to week. Some weeks there are only a few basses listed; some weeks there are many. A week earlier or later and the results of your listing may have been different.

And fourth, one factor that increasingly tends to put downward pressure on prices is the increasing factor of Ebay fraud. We here in the group are constantly discovering and reporting fraud in Alembic listings on Ebay. But dispite our efforts, the unfortunate fact is that folks are now much less likely to bid on Ebay because of the high number of fraudulent listings. Less bidders means lower market prices.

Anyway, welcome again, and good luck whatever you decide to do.

Yo, Senny! Glad you still have your Alembic. Your posting prompted me to just say to the members here how much of a professional you are. Besides that folks, he is a mother on the bass. I've worked gigs with Senny. He is solid as a rock and he plays right in the pocket. It is a pleasure to listen at the board.
i also suggest you pick up Holyland. It is a great cd. Some of the best bass tones I've heard lately. Great players and horns abound. I check in everyday here but don't post anymore. Now if you have a Hamer 12 on the block.... let me know!

Hey Danno,
Thanks for your support. To say you support in private is one thing, but to post that you have someone's back on a respected forum where you yourself are well respected proves that you have my back and are a class act. When Danno found out that i had a CD for sale, he purchased it without hesitation..When i found out about that his band (DOOMTREE)had new CD that was was available, i went right over to Best Buy and grabbed one, and i am not only impressed with his playing, but very high standards he has with his gear and the way he conducts his life and business..
This is the type of camaraderie that we all must have..
Thank you DANNO, and everybody here..

I have been looking for a nice used series one for quite some time. I have only in the last couple of years been in a position to afford one, despite playing for decades. This one rapidly went past what I could pay on Ebay. I highly value Alembic and other brands and have even toured the Alembic company.

I don't appreciate someone posting an instrument on Ebay with no real intention of selling it.

It's very frustrating to me when people don't understand plain english..
I had every intention of selling my Alembic...
When i put it on Ebay, i quickly regretted what i had done. If someone had met my reserve, my Alembic would have been on the way to them..
Once an instrument is on ebay, and someone meets the reserve, the seller is bound by law to complete the sale..
No one met my reserve... and now in retrospect, i am glad that me reserve was not met, and i intend to keep it..so read back on all my posts next time before you make accusations that are unfounded....

No attacks at all. It's clear that you value your bass very highly, and I am happy to hear it. I do think a little research would have saved you an eBay listing fee, though.

On the other hand, I think seeing your auction push to $4K should give pause to any around here currently considering the sale of their Series basses. If anyone has an instrument of similar condition, they should probably be looking for something closer to $3500 than they might previously have expected. If a few people benefit from that lesson, then the value of Alembics will continue to appreciate. Thanks for pushing the envelope.

Oh, and a belated welcome to the boards...

An observation on eBay… Using the Alembic F2-B which was included with the series 1 bass, it is a great example of how pricing follows no rules on eBay.
On 7/8 David asked a question of how much is a F2-B worth?
Bob answered with a sound estimate “an F-2B is in the $450-500 range. They went for $400 when list price for a new one was $750. Now that it has gone up over $1K, the used market should be on the upswing for recent models.”

Now for what really happened;

In June 2006 2 Alembic F2-B preamps were sold on eBay; both were buy it now. 1 sold in 2hrs 31 minutes for $ 399.00 and the other sold in 5 hrs 31 minutes and went for $49.99. That’s correct $49.99. It was listed at 11:36 pm and sold at 5:07am the next day. The $49.99 unit works,The New owner said there are some scratches but no problems.

Today there is another F2 B listed for $800.00.

EBay as a pricing resource is unreliable at best. It has skewed the price of used guitars, automobiles and many other items.

FWIW, the $49.99 "Buy It Now" had to have been a typo (consider how close it is to $499.99, a recent buy it now price for the same item). It's possible (though unlikely) that it was a huge gack by someone who had no idea what they were selling. But - you are right about ebay providing widely varying estimates of prices. What I miss is being able to get historical data on things sold. It seems completed auctions only go back 2-3 months now, whereas they used to go back a year or more.

Rich-

A Buy Now sale is not an auction. If the price is at the low end of the range, the sale happens quickly. This can serve to depress prices for others by creating hope in watchful buyers of a similar deal being repeated. They might be less willing to buy one for $499 if they thought $399 might come back around. It doesn't say that buyers won't pay $500 for them, though.

Both of the F-2Bs you identified were probably purchased by the first few interested parties to see the offerings. The $49.99 sale might have been slower because of the overnight hours or because the buyers were scrutinizing the listing a little bit longer. Personally, I would be afraid of an item offered on eBay at ten percent of its reasonable value. Pulling the quick trigger on that auction would make me feel I was risking my rating. I would certainly do a little communicating with the seller before actually sending money.

The new listing at $800 has maybe a 5% chance of someone taking the offer. Was that the seller that claimed these things never sold at discount? I suspect that you can buy a new one of these for a hair under $900 from the dealer network. The claim of no discount available makes the seller either ignorant of the market or attempting to deceive. Either way, it doesn't make for an auction that you want to look at to guage the market.

Without getting into a serious discussion of eBay, statistics, and economic theory, I think it's a pretty good source for information. I believe that free auctions do a pretty good job of showing the market value of most Alembic gear. I wouldn't count on any individual sale or short period for info, but watching over the course of several months or years can show trends pretty well.

Just my opinions and observations...

BTW, is there a way to get your CD without using PayPal? I'd like to buy it, but I'm not in love with PayPal's practices and security (or lack thereof). I'm in Joisey, if that helps.

Cheers,

Kevin

Done! Cdbaby.com it is! $12.99 plus s&h (20% discount for two or more). FWIW, Vintage Vinyl didn't have it listed on their site.

When you receive it, please take note of the liner notes.. Much of the melodic and harmonic duties are handled by various bass guitars... i purposely orchestrated the music without a lot of electric guitar...BTW- i saw Allan Holdsworth last month at the Turning Point in Nyack...Jimmy Johnson was on bass, Alembic of course, and it seemed as if he was plugged DI into the house, with no amp... he was absolutely amazing, the whole band was..

Senny,
Yeah I saw a similar setup for Alan H, Jimmy J, and Chad W at a Drum Pad clinic here in Chicago (actually Palatine). Jimmy ran straight off a power supply and into the mains. All Jimmy had on stage was two floor wedge monitors.
... talk about reducing loadin and loadout, Very Cool!

I met Jimmy Johnson back in 1987 when he played with Holdsworth at the Bottom Line in NYC.(playing a Yamaha because his Alembic was stolen)
I had already been in the "biz" since 1980, but
was a newcomer for sure.. After the gig, i hung out for a bit for the chance to speak with him.
I had a demo tape that i was getting around at that time, and Jimmy was very gracious to me, and expressed interest in hearing what i was up to, and was receptive to hearing the demo tape that i gave him..He's a class act.. not too self absorbed to hear that he's shaped lives and given inspiration to so many..That is a lot more than i can say for some of the "big name" bassists that i have met and been sorry that i did..I rarely gig live with my Alembic, but when i do, i run it in stereo-- neck pickup through an Ampeg B-18, bridge pickup through an Ampeg B-15...Also- interesting to note, i most often use the neck pickup only when i record with my Alembic-- i just recorded a new CD project with my Alembic in this way...Like a P bass , but better,,,, rounder and deeper..

Cool! As both guitarist and bassist (albeit not very good at either one), I appreciate them both. Hell, I apreciate ANYONE that can truly play ANY instrument! I look forward to receiving the CD.

FWIW, cdbaby.com's Pres./Owner is a real piece of work...warped sense of humour, et al, LOL!

Tony:

Holyland is great! I just got finished ripping it to my iPod after burning it up in the cd player in my truck all weekend.

Genre=Unclassifiable is exactly correct! Each song is completely different from the rest. I hear all of your influences in there and then some. For example, the d'Ug (Doug) Pinnick 12-string King's X thing is there, but you threw in Ty Tabor as well!

This is a "bass" album done with taste and restraint. A disc full of noodling and/or bass solos ad nauseum it is not. My only complaint: the disc isn't long enough...gimme more! LOL! J/K.

Highly recommended!

Kevin

You are absolutely correct! This is bass album not a fest for the ego driven player. Carefully crafted tunes that showcase melodic playing and displaying the role of the bass in a band context. And as Kevin states, variety in the tunes. A bargin at twice the price. Lets us all support eachother here. Perhaps a new category on the board? Member Releases?

wow, i don't know what to say.. except thanks.
I would rather sell 2 Cd's to guys like you that "got" what i tried to do than to sell 5 million to a bunch of morons..and like Danno said, let's support each other here!

I don't know. It's great to be appreciated, but five million morons represent an awful lot of money...

I'm going to have to get me a copy of this disk, but my musical attention is 100% occupied for the next three weeks. After that, I'm in.

Bob:

You won't be disappointed. Tony's CD has something for everyone. I got positive comments from co-workers playing it in my cubicle when I ripped it to my iPod.

It's rare that a monster bass player produces his own CD and doesn't produce a "can you top this" mish-mosh of endless bass solos over a drum machine and programmed synth backline just for the sake of showing off. Tony's CD is all about melody and composition, not about showing off his chops.

Tony:

Prego! You're very welcome. Keep up the good work. When are you playing in Joisey next and who with? Inquiring minds wanna know!

Cheers,

Kevin

P.S., Remember guys/gals: 20%off from cdbaby.com if you order two or more "Holyland" CD's. Tony is certainly worthy of the support...the same support you'd give to any of the other Alembic Club members that released an official work. Gentlemen, start your credit cards! LOL!

Tony: I just got another second chance offer on your bass. It came through my email and had all of the ebay logs, attachments, etc., etc., to make an unsuspecting person think this great bass can be mine for the Second Chance Price available now at $2,150.......I don't know if ebay can, or even wants to, do anything about this stuff. I am sure it is having a negative impact on their business......Thanks guys, stay cool!
