thanks. looks like it will be here friday after all. i have a rehersal friday night, i dunno about showing up with a bass that i've never played before (can playing an 8-string be more difficult than playing a fretless? i dunno.) i haven't decided if i wanna risk it yet. the suspense is killing me. |

Well the spyder arrived today. i pulled it out of the box, tuned it up and an hour later i had to force myself to put it down! This thing is too much fun to play! It balances much better than my 80's distilate exploiter and i don't feel like my right hand is getting forced up over the fretboard. many thanks to oliver for dealing with me on this one. i hope you're as happy with your new bass as i am with this one! also many thanks to brian for buying my series I which helped to finance this deal. last i heard he was a happy camper too. i'll post pictures later of my new acquisition with the rest of my small alembic family later when i've had a chance to come down from the rush! |

Just curious, Tim. Did you also pull the trigger on your old Exploiter on ebay a few weeks ago that had wound up in Memphis? |

i took this thing to rehersal last night. played it for 4 hours and could not put it down. my backup bass never left its case. setup and intonation were perfect right out of the box. no neck dive. i'd guess it weighs about 12 lbs. not light, but certainly lighter than my series II 5-string and balances better to boot. the sound is fantastic. the bass string is below the octave string on this one. i play finger style and with just a little right hand technique adjustment, i can have either a subtle top end or in-your-face twang from the octave string. very versatile. we play modern and classic rock and it never sounded out of place. having owned 7 alembics ranging from a distallate to a series II, i have to say that alembic totally outdid themselves on this one. >>>Just curious, Tim. Did you also pull the trigger on your old Exploiter on ebay a few weeks ago that had wound up in Memphis?<<< well funny that you should mention that bass. that's what put me down this road. i traded that bass away when i bought my series II. that's one of the few basses that i regret selling. i was waffling on buying it and somebody else won the auction. feeling dissappointed, i saw oliver's for sale, made a couple of inquiries and the rest is history. i have to say that i'm much happier with this one than i would have been with my old one. |

dunno if this is the best place to post this but here goes.... my other basses are gathering dust. our band just retooled (new drummer, new singer, new name probably too) just about the time this bass showed up. it's pretty much become an integral part of our sound. we're doing a large outdoor gig on the 9th and so a big crowd's gonna get to see and hear it in action. here's a shot of it in its new home....

yeah the guitar player was taking a beer break on this song. we were doing "never been any reason" by head east with just vocals bass and drums. it was awesome! i can pretty much push a 2nd instrumentalist clear outta the room with that 8-string if i'm of the mind to. i guess lefty drummers are rare, no? at any rate i'm almost always set up stage right so it's kinda nice to hear the high hat better. actually that fretless is a long scale (just measured it to be sure) it's known in some circles as the steve fossen bass. usually it gets played on about 1/3 of our songs but lately all of my other basses have been taking a back seat to the spyder! i dunno why i even bothered to take it outta the case! |
