1984 Exploiter

"ACCORDING TO MY FRIEND AND ROCK AND ROLL HISTORIAN "ROD" THIS IS THE MODEL THAT PETE TOWNSEND USED"

Nice bass but good ol' Rod the "Historian" needs to brush up a bit.

Very nice - a Distillate Exploiter. Someone has to be in the market for this one.

Pretty sure that's one of my old basses that got used for trade bait for my series II.

it was an awesome bass. i could channel JE on this one no problem. it had a hipshot on the E string that fell apart on me so i had an original alembic tuner put back on. i'm also pretty sure pete never played this one ;-)

there are days when i miss that bass. if i had the scratch laying around i might even consider buying it back. it was a player for sure. i wonder how it made its way from bass nw to memphis.

i still have alot to learn about alembics, but i'm confused about the ad copy regarding hipshot tuners. i see screw holes in one pic on the ad, so it's clear something's been done w/at least two of the tuners, but aren't the tuners now on this bass original gotoh's? they don't look like hipshots to me and that's what the seller claims are on the bass. i'm confused.

Nice catch Patrick. According to the log sheet pictured in the listing, the original tuners were Schallers. And there's definitely no D-tuner in the pictures. He says it's original except for "changed tuners". The text definitely doesn't agree with the pictures. Anyone looking at bidding on this bass should asked the seller for a better desciption of the tuner situation.

Interesting situation here. I wonder if it is a brother to Tim's bass rather than the actual thing. The tuners definitely don't match what are in his picture, though the rest of the configuration seems the same down to the slightly unusual headstock shape. I can't tell if the top wood matches from the available pics, but it's at least very similar.

I don't know for sure, but it seems that Alembic did often make instruments in sets like this back in that timeframe. I have seen quite a few Spoilers and Persuaders of that vintage that look like they could be twins.

IIRC I had all of the tuners replaced because the original ones were chrome and i wanted brass tuners to match the gold hardware on the bass. mike lull did the work. he had to dowell a couple of holes because the pattern on the new ones were different than the old ones.

i'm of half a mind to trade or sell my 1977 series I in for this one. anybody in the market for a nice medium scale small body series I?

Not I, but I am sure that I have recently seen interest expressed in such an instrument. Start a new thread and post some pics. If there's interest, you'll hear about it promptly!
