Hi Alembic Fans. I am running 2 eBay auctions for Alembic pickups, and I'm thinking maybe I should just be offering them here. If you haven't seen the listings, please go to eBay, search for Alembic and let me know what you think. I'm just trying to clear some extra stuff out of here... I'm suffering from a bout of Bell's Palsy currently and it has forced me to look at my life and causes of stress. Clutter causes me stress, so I'm in a reducing-mode...

You would get better response if they were also listed in the bass section.

Ah, that is the question!

I am really committed to playing a six string, but my current Bubinga Essence does not have purpleheart or ebony laminates--nor even a bridge block or a Q switch. I'm trying to decide whether to swap it for something that does or go ahead and route the holes for the FatBoys and install them.

I now have a complete set of Series electronics [PUs, a PF-6 and controls]. I'm not sure whether these will go into a project bass or whether I'll try to hunt up [order?] a six string Alembic that is already prepped for the electronics.

Any suggestions, anybody? Alembic bodies for sale w/o electronics?

I will say it is nice to have such decisions to make!

If I were taking-on such a project, I would probably follow Leo Fender's example: Start with a body "blank" with an area left where the pickups can be installed and moved-about. Also a bolt-on neck. Have you even seen pictures of his "peg-board" instruments? Leo could install pickups, replace them, move them towards the bridge or away without even loosening the strings! By experimenting this way, he could determine his preferred positions for pickups, pickup types, and pickup combinations.

You will still have a lot to figure-out as far as wood combinations etc, but at least if you know EXACTLY what you want to do with your pickups, I think things will go easier. Or of course, you could start with a really pretty Alembic, and just rout-away... but then if it doesn't come-out quite right, or maybe just leaves you wondering "what if I..." , you have de-valued a much more expensive instrument. AND your experiment still is incomplete.

Great idea! No, I hadn't heard about Leo Fender's pegboard bass before, but it "sounds" <chuckle> like a great idea. I had heard about Les Paul's "rail guitar," though!

I know I really prefer the harmonics on the uper half of the neck, and often pluck in the middle of the fretted string to enhance them even more.

It would be great if I could also experiment with different laminate combinations on neck throughs. Look at what Alembic discovered about ebony lams in the last five years--and that after building basses for more than 30 years!

I also played a Linc Luthier bass once, and found the horizonally laminated neck to be livelier than anything I have ever played, before or since. I've even toyed with installing the PUs in a Linc bass.

Anybody else got any thoughts?
