EDIT: This is NOT a Europa but an Elan model indicated by the "H" in the serial number. Thanks, for changing the thread title.

Hi Guys, Ill try to keep this short.
I just picked up this beautiful Elan 6 string Used (Serial 91H6690).

The Bass is simply too big for me. theres no way I can play this thing for any length of time, Simply, I am a short man and this is a BIG Bass.

I am looking mostly for Straight trades for Alembic basses of similar value ...
Im Looking for 4 strings 30-34 inch scale or maybe another 5 if the bass seems right (I already have an Essence 5 string that I love so Im really mostly wanting a 4.)

About the Elan, let me say that the bass does not look like it was played all that much it is in amazing condition and sounds incredible, I just put a brand new set of DR stainless steels on it (30-125), it had very, very old strings on it before. The only thing to mention is that the tip of the headstock has a little ding to it (see photo)

Please let me know if you are interested and if you have anything in mind for a trade.
Thanks
- Tom

Tom,
She's a beauty! Are you sure the body is Ash? It looks like maple. She must sound wonderful with a real bite! Don't worry, someone will take your offer quickly.

It is very likely to be maple since that's not a Europa...

The H serial number indicates an Elan which was stock with a maple body.

Hadn't noticed that before...

Plus it has the cone headstock and the bar tailpiece (Rouge-ish). The elbow contour reveal looks like an Elan.

Interesting mixture of Alembic style!

I'm with you n that one bsbee & tbrannon. It does look more like an elan that an Europa. The thickness of the upper horn is greater on the elan than europa, also the straight tailbar and the fact that the inner body core is visible from the front of the bass are all characteristics of Elan bass. The main giveaway is that it doesnt have the quick change bass and treble switches that come with the Europa bass.

I'd stick my neck out and say Elan 6.

Still an awesome bass.

The "H" in the serial would indicate that this is an Elan as well as the other points listed here. Different body shape/backwood....etc.
The two top switches are three way with the bottom one being two way.

Hopefully Dave will pop in here and can change the title of the thread, I already edited my original post. Sorry for the confusion.

For those of us considering trades [or offers], what do you think the value of this bass is?

A few more clues:
The switch / control lay out is not the same as an Europa. And it looks like it has no bridge block? Europa's have the block. Still a beautiful Alembic Bass!

Trade accomplished. It was very nice to meet Tom and his wife. She is also an Alembic Skylark owner. How's that for when you get GAS!
Tom, I hope you enjoy the Stanley and play it in good health.

Danno,

Congratulations! You now have enough Alembic sixes to start a breeding program of your own. If they do reproduce in your studio in the dark of the night, could I have the pick of the litter? <g>

Aren't they all female? I'm very fortunate to have [in Alembic] 4 6's (2 wide, 2 narrow 3 Spoiler and now an Elan) 6 5's ( 1 Distillate, 2 Essense, 3 Excel) 2 4's (Spoiler and Exploiter) and a 7 with a Skylark on the way. Now to find homes for my non-Alembic family!

The Elan set up beautifully to my usual 1/2 step down playing. Relieved the neck, lowered the bridge and nut and adjusted the pups. Very easy to play with the wide jazz spacing. 2 1/2 at the nut 3 1/2 at the 24th. I always loved this model in the old catalog. This bad mamma-jamma is just about 4 feet from top to bottom. Oh, btw the extra switches are bass-treble boost/cut.
I'm going to use it on a cover of James Brown's "Santa Claus, Come Straight to the Ghetto".
Thanks again Tom for making the trade possible.

Took it to practice tonight (wearing my new black Alembic tee).
It sounded great. Tight with great sustain. Should record nicely next week for the Christmas ep and collectors vinyl to be released around the holidays. i must say I'm liking the DR's you put on it.

I would love to hear the track once you get it done, Did you say vinyl! Should sound killer, fatter and warmer than usual.
Glad you like the DR's, Ive been switching back and forth between TI powerbass and DR(Millers)these days.
