I'm seriously Jonesing for an Alembic F-1X preamp. Can I use F-1X with just the power amp of my SWR SM400 (and not use the SWR preamp)? I'm not a technical guy, so please forgive me if these are elementary questions, or if this topic has been covered.

I can only afford a used one, I just don't have the money for a new one right now.

Thanks for your time,
Dave

Not at all! I perfectly understand your want for that preamp... I was looking for an used one too some months ago, but I ended getting another used Demeter after all... let us know if you're able to win the auction, otherwise I'll look for another one, ok?

Sorry, I forgot to reply to the other question: yes, you should be able to run the Alembic preamp thru the SWR amp. I did the same with my Demeter and a Hartke HA3500 a lot of time ago... and I must admit it worked fine :-)
Yes, a good serious power amp is just another thing, but you'll hear the difference anyway.
