Just looking for a cheap Jazz bass that I can beat up on. I don't like taking my Alembic to house shows and smoky bars. Looking to spend around 250. Thanks guys!

Sean- I got a Squier vintage modified fretless jazz bass a few months ago and I love it! You can get them (fretted or fretless) anywhere on the internet for $279 and usually free shipping and no sales tax.

There's not really a lot of difference between the Squier and MIM Fenders, or even MIA ones, if you ask me. I was working at GC in '83 when they came out - we got our first shipment of $150 Squiers the same day we got our first $1500 Stratocaster Elite (outrageously expensive for the time). I fiddled with that Elite most of the day every day for a week, and couldn't get it to play as well as the Squiers did right out of the box. For a beater instrument, you can't (ahem) beat them. Musician's Friend currently sells the Squier MVFJB for, as Mike says, $279. The Standard Jazz Bass goes for $230, and currently they have at least one "blem" piece for $195. If you're really looking to save a little, don't let the blem scare you. My son got the Fender Blonde Blues Jr. amp he'd been lusting after for Winter Solstice last year - knowing his idea of a clothing boutique is the Salvation Army store, I went blem for $90 less. Turns out "blem" can just mean the box was opened - it was pristine.

Hmmm I just may do that, I've always been a little scared of squires, but really I do just want something I can beat the hell out of. Blem would probably be a good way to go because I'm gonna blem the heck out of it anyway. My good friends uncle owns a music store and usually he can get me 50% off so I'm still hoping for that, but if that doesn't work out I'll for sure go for one of those. Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Well...I think I finally figured out how to get the best deal from guitar center...I bought a squier vintage p bass the other day and argued them down from 250 to 210, no tax. I was pretty satisfied, but then I had a crazy idea. Return the thing and tell them I found it online cheaper. So i did it today and it worked like a charm. I told them I found it online from a private seller for 170 and would like to return this one. The salesman immediately matched the price and I ended up with a 250 dollar bass for 170. Man....I can't wait to do this again!! (I'm poor and in college, I can be a cheap bastard if I want to)!

my integrity is worth A LOT more than 40 dollars.......

That's not something you wanna boast about in forum like this. This forum is a lot more civil and mature than claiming "I WTF PWND Guitar Center!".

But anyways, I would've paid bit more and get Geddy Lee sig or Marcus Miller bass... both of which are made in Japan, much much better quality (IMHO) than Mex or Korea. YMMV.

I don't ever remember saying I "pwned" Guitar Center and if I ever do say that, I'm going to punch myself in the face. I also have never said that I even dislike guitar center, I only enjoy good deals. I'm a 20 year old college student, I need to save all I can and I don't like taking my Alembic to House shows and partys. Shockingly enough tko, I don't have the money for a geddy lee or a marcus miller (not to mention the neck on the geddy lee, yikes to thin)! I wanted something cheap that played decently enough. I took a chance and if they wouldn't have matched it I would be without another bass. I think Guitar Center can spare the money, I would never ever do this to a private seller, a large corporation on the other hand... So I guess I apologize to everyone for this offensive post.

P.S-I'm in a band called Dad I'm Gay...what the hell do you all expect from me?

"WTF PWND"?????

O.K., I admit it, I don't text message (if I'm going to pick up a phone to communicate with someone, I TALK), I'm old, and I have no idea what this means, (well, I do have some idea what "WTF" means, but it doesn't seem to fit in this context).

Personally, I'm not all that offended by Sean's tactics. I've certainly seen a parent go into GC to buy a guitar for their kid not knowing the "game" involved in buying a guitar, specifically that the MSRP is a fiction and bargaining is expected. From what I've seen, the GC salespeople have no hesitiation in taking advantage of such customers by charging full price. And you can bet GC and the salesperson still made $ on this sale or they wouldn't have done it. There are certainly retail establishments where I appreciate the care and service provided and am willing to pay a premium for such. Unfortunately, GC isn't such an establishment.

Bill, tgo

Thank you lbpesq, well put. I guess my problem with the whole thing is that they went ahead and matched it without questioning so I feel like I've done nothing wrong. They certainly didn't have to do that. I'm happy they did, but they didn't have to. They didn't ask for anything and if they would have I would have obviously said "forget it". They still made a profit, I have a cheap bass and everyones happy. By the way, thank you Chuck, nice addition to the conversation...

P.S- yeah I got frustrated and deleted my account, so what? I'm emotional!

Sean; for what it's worth. There are all kinds of things in life that happen to us that illicit elicit an emotional response. In my view, it's always a good idea to stop and breath before reacting. It's ok to be emotional. But it's helpful to breath. Anyway, I'm glad your back!

There is nothing wrong with making a deal. I love it when a customer grinds me and we both win in the end. But, when you do what jubeas3eyes did. That's just uncool. And I dare say, lawyer or not, you wouldn't even do that Bill.

P.S. I love you Bill.

Dave,

I think elicit was the word you were looking for.

Illicit is in some other threads.
