Hello,
I purchased this Hyak guitar thinking I would play it as much as my Hyak bass and I was wrong.
Now I'm thinking of trading it for my first Alembic bass.
The Q switches and 5 pin are not wired.
Active EMG's with push-pull pots.

Thanks,
Art

Hi Art! Welcome to the board!

Art is a good friend of mine here in Asheville. He's brought his Hyak bass out to the house, and I see him in town from time to time at Boudreau's where my band plays. He's been looking in on our site for a while, and watches the Alembic listings on Ebay.

Art:

Being "Bill, the guitar one", I unfortunately have no Alembic bass to trade (I do have a Schecter, if you're interested - lol). However, I have a bunch of other stuff (guitars, amps, speaker cabs, pedal steel, howzabout a nice F2-B preamp?) or would be interested in an outright purchase if you were so inclined.

I'd like to see some pics of the Hyak bass, too, if it's handy...upper horn intricacies are very interesting in my opinion.

Welcome Art! Any friend of Dave is a friend of ours.
Great looking guitar, I think Bill may have another one for his collection soon...
Thanks Keavin, now you made me hungry with that picture! (the power of suggestion). Those doughnuts are dangerously addictive...

Forgive me if this topic has been covered, but why are Hyak instruments identical to Alembics? Was Hyak a former craftsman at Alembic?
Thanks

Yes they once worked for Alembic in the 70's. I believe that the company was only around for several years. I also have some very interesting literature (also in electronic format) if anyone cares to see it.

Thanks Art.
Wow, they took everything except the kitchen sink when they left Alembic!
Yes, please post the literature, I'm sure many here would be interested.

Just out of curiosity, do these have truss rods? I don't see any access point for adjustments...

No truss rods on Hyak instruments (they used graphite to stabilize) unless Alembic has put one in as they did on "Robert's bass".
Please see thread on "Robert's Hyak Restoration" http://alembic.com/club/messages/631/9853.html

BTW, I would trust NO ONE BUT ALEMBIC with a Hyak instrument.

You know that this thread has been very inspiring to me again in the way of Hyak...
Back to where this all began :-)
I am sooooo ready for my first Alembic Bass.
Is there anyone here interested in a trade for the Hyak guitar shown at the beginning of the post :-) Thanks, Art

I promise to give an Alembic a good home and play it daily :-)

And you may have this nice vintage Hyak guitar in return!

Can anyone here tell me what this Hyak guitar may be worth on a trade?

I know that is a subjective question... I want to be as fair as possible to both another party and myself (I may have overpaid from feedback I have received). I can always make up the difference in a trade with some $$.

Thanks, Art

Full description:

Handmade guitar from Seattle based company (Hyak) in the late 70's. Cherry body, purpleheart top and back, 11 laminate neck through-purpleheart / graphite / maple / graphite / koa / purpleheart / koa / graphite / maple / graphite / purpleheart. Macassa ebony fingerboard with large abalone inlays, silver side dots. Handcut brass tailpiece / bridge with sustain block / pickup frames. Non original EMG pickups (single-humbucker) with push / pull pots. Original mini switches and 5 pin xlr are not connected and remaining original electronics are not included. The guitar is in good condition. the guitar has some dings-mostly around the edge of the body, one on the neck arround the 9th fret, as well some bigger scratches on the back of the body (all hard to show in pictures). Some of the gluelines along the veneers on the headstock / fingerboard are slightly open. The neck is straight as an arrow, the action is super low. The guitar sounds just amazing and plays like a dream. Comes with gigbag.

Cool, Art! So, uh... what's the status of that ugly nonsense with Austin's stolen basses? Did you and the other fellow who bought his stolen brown bass get to the bottom of it, yet? I hope you guys didn't get screwed.

I'd sure like to hear the story... if inclined you could email me privately if you're willing to share the story and update me -although I'm sure others are interested as well.

Take care, Art, glad you sold it as you wanted, and hope it'll help you get an Alembic that's right for you. My new Signature Deluxe Balance K is absolutely amazing!

Congrats, it's a beautiful guitar. If the timing was different, I would have made a run at it myself. Should you ever be looking to sell or trade, let me know.
