Hi there. I'm looking to trade my Status S2 Classic bolt on 5 for an Alembic if possible. I had the bass built for me earlier this year by Rob Green at Status. Its a Walnut body with Tiger Maple front wings and a walnut tone block. 2 octave graphite bolt on neck, monorail bridge, and the standard S2 preamp (bass, treble, mid freq select and mid cut/flat/boost switch). The colour is Aqua Blue but its actually more a sea green/turquoise, beautiful colour. I had it finished in high gloss at extra cost, and its a very high quality finish.

Tonally it can go from snappy bright high mid growl, low mid burp, mid scooped funk slap heaven, and a whole load of other tones - the 18 volt EQ is very powerful. It does a great Billy Gould Faith No More tone, a great later John Entwistle tone, a great Mark King-esq slap tone, a great Stu Zender style fingerstyle tone, I could go on. The graphite neck adds a great deal of clarity and is rock solid. Action is low, could go ultra low if needs be without problems. Tightest B I've used as well.

I'd like to trade for a 5 string Alembic. I'd really like something like a distillate/series shape if possible, the small body Alembics really appeal, but I realise they tend to be the more pricey models...

This Status cost me £1500 ($3020) earlier this year - no idea how its value would compare to a used Alembic, as you hardly ever see them in the UK! Here are some pics:

I'm based in the UK, not sure about trading overseas but i'm sure something could be arranged if anyone is interested. It comes in a hard Status branded (made by Hiscox I believe) case.

Thanks!

Welcome to the boards and forgive the question here, Wil, but...

If you had this bass built for you less than a year ago and the tones it has are so great, why are you trading it? What is it that this bass is missing that you hope to get out of an Alembic?

Well, I wouldnt be gaining anything, I dont think. I'd just be getting something "different"... If anything I'd be opening myself up to a whole world of necks that move when the seasons change and electronics that you need a degree to understand ; )

I've always wanted an Alembic though, so as I tend to use my Series 1 Status more than this one thought it may be worth testing the water to see what kind of Alembic I could get for this one, if any.

Wil,

Just a suggestion, but have you tried places like the For Sale/Trade board at Talkbass?

The reason I ask is because this forum is frequented by folks who LOVE their Alembics. Many of us own other brands along with our Alembic(s), but I think you'll find more people looking to trade away an Alembic for other brands elsewhere. Typically this is the place people come looking for 'em.

That being said, there are quite a few guys on here who own more than 1 Alembic and who are looking for something else to put in the mix, so I think your post is a wise one- certainly make sure you frequent the board until you get that Alembic and when you do get your hands on it make sure you post some pictures of it and make yourself known.

I read these forums for about 2 years before I even posted and then it took me another 2 or so before I got my hands on my first Alembic. They're certainly worth the money and this forum is full of great people who have probably forgotten more about music than I'll ever hope to know.

Thanks for the advice tbrannon. To be honest after a few days of having this up on various forums I've decided I'd be mad to trade it - you know how it is with instruments, one day you're smitten with one bass, the next another, but it always comes around again. I do intend to own an Alembic one day in the near future, but I'm going to save my pennies I think.
