I've had a Spyder 4 that I bought from a friend of mine about 10 years ago. Code 8483181. I have no idea what those numbers mean, but I'm sure you guys can decifer it. It's beautiful, sounds awesome, plays awesome. One thing...I play guitar. It's a waste to just have it sit in it's case forever, so I'm a sell it. I'd trade it for a Les Paul or ES335. Anyways, I'm in NYC. Let me know if you're interested.Spyder 4Code 8483181

My guess is that what you have is a Spoiler with the Exploiter body shape. The third character of the serial number is probably an S for Spoiler - 84S3181.

Hi Carlos. I agree with Bob, the third character appears to be an S; and the bass is a Spoiler/Exploiter rather than a Spyder. By the way, the first two numbers indicate that the bass was made in 1984.

Let's see if I can get this right. Essentially, the original Spyders were custom made for John Entwistle and featured, among other things, Series electronics. Subsequently, the basic body shape of John's basses was offered as an option and called the Exploiter body shape. Thus you could order any Alembic with the optional shape. That your bass has the S in the serial number and appears to have Spoiler electronics indicates that your bass is a Spoiler with the Exploiter body shape. Of the Exploiters dating from the '80's, it seems to me that the majority are Spoilers.

In 2003, Alembic started a limited run of basses which were actually called Spyders; see here. These basses feature some special custom touches like web inlays and four part tail pieces.

From time to time, Mica runs serial number searches. Go to the "Owning An Alembic" section of the club and then click on "Serial Number Requests". Post the serial number there, and when she gets a chance, and if she can find it, she'll post the build record for the bass. Hah! I see you've already done that!

It's probably already gone. He told me he was finishing up on a deal when I contacted him about a week ago and that he would get back to me if it broke down. Haven't heard from him again since, so I am figuring it went through.
